The Director of (Statistical) Consulting will contribute to the integrated research and teaching land-grant Mission of the Statistics Department and IANR, as an effective scholar and citizen, including supporting student recruitment and IANR science literacy.
The main task of the successful applicant will be to manage the Statistical Cross-disciplinary Collaboration and Consulting Lab or SC3L also known as the (Statistical) Help Desk. The Help Desk is staffed by qualified PhD students. The Director chooses the PhD students in conjunction with the Department Chair. The Help desk receives project requests from IANR and other UNL researchers, including faculty at research and extension centers. The Director normally assigns projects to an appropriate PhD student who is overseen as needed by the Director. The Director also accept projects that s/he deems too difficult for the PhD students but are important to complete. In the process of providing consulting services to researchers, the Director trains PhD students in Statistics to function as independent consultants, teaches researchers outside of statistics how to use statistical support effectively in their work, and builds long term collaborations within IANR and across UNL. To this end the Director of Consulting frequently serves on thesis committees in the Statistics Department and other IANR and UNL Departments. The Director may also invite the participation of other faculty in projects if their expertise is relevant. The Help Desk is also expected to accept external clients as appropriate.

The Director is a key leadership role for statistical analysis at UNL. The primary research contribution of the Director of Consulting is leading the Help Desk and serving its clients. This includes management of the help desk and project management. The research component of this position also includes collaborative or consultative research where the contribution of the statistical analysis to the overall research problem is clear and essential. The Director may also conduct research projects on his/her own, including in the scholarship of consulting, consistent with leading the Help Desk.
The Director of Consulting will normally teach the equivalent of three standard courses at the undergraduate, Master’s and PhD level. In particular, the Director will normally teach courses on statistical consulting and collaboration; other teaching assignments will be appropriate to the Director’s expertise and other duties. In addition, the incumbent will participate in program and curriculum improvement. Specific course and other teaching-related assignments may vary over time based on Department priorities.
The successful applicant will be integrated within existing research groups; connect with stakeholders, agency, and/or industry partners to strengthen research and educational programming; effectively obtain and leverage external and internal support (grants, fee revenue, etc.) for research and teaching activities; mentor undergraduate and graduate students; publish in high-quality, high-impact peer-reviewed journals, and participate in scientific meetings and other appropriate professional activities; and translate research-based information into learner-centered products. This includes creating scholarly, innovative, and high impact learning programs and tools; identifying issues and opportunities focused on learner needs and emerging regional and national issues with international relevance; measuring the impact of the incumbent’s programs and communicating results to administrators, stakeholders, users, and media; and, mentoring colleagues through professional development, translational research, grants, and professional writing.
In addition to the above-described duties, the individual will be expected to accept committee assignments, reporting responsibilities, and other special ad hoc assignments as requested at the administrative unit, college/division, institute, and/or university level.

- Ph.D. in statistics, data science, computer science, engineering, or closely related field.
- Experience with consulting or applications.
- Computational proficiency.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Teaching experience at the university level.
- Demonstrated experience in statistics or data science in a field of importance to IANR.
- Evidence of ability and interest in modern analysis techniques and data types.
- Experience managing a shared resource, core, or similar group.
- Interest in working with diverse or underrepresented communities or groups.
