Position Summary

The Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs and Campus Diversity is responsible for the coordination and development of student services and building the inclusive excellence of SDSU's staff and faculty at San Diego State University. Departments include, but not limited to, Assistant Deans for Student Affairs; Career Services; Center for Educational Partnerships, Outreach and Success; Communications Services; Counseling & Psychological Services; Cultural and Identity Centers; Educational Opportunity Programs and Ethnic Affairs; Financial Aid and Scholarships; Military Veterans Program; New Student and Parent Programs; Office of the Student Ombudsman; Residential Education; Resource Management; Student Ability Success Center; Student Health Services; Student Life and Leadership; Student Rights and Responsibilities; Testing Services Office; Well-being & Health Promotion; and programming related to Inclusive Excellence.

Division of Student Affairs and Campus Diversity

The Division facilitates the academic and career success, personal growth, and well-being of all students, and works proactively to address systemic inequities through professional learning, community building, advocacy, policy recommendations and organizational structures. Reporting directly to the Director of the Center for Student Rights and Responsibilities and/or the Associate Director of the Center for Student Rights and Responsibilities, the Student Conduct Coordinator is responsible for adjudicating alleged violations of Title V, Section 41301 of the California Code of Regulations. This position receives, investigates, and determines appropriate restorative sanctions related to reports of alleged academic and non-academic misconduct filed by faculty, staff, students, the University Police Department, Aztec Shops, the Residential Education Office, and members of the community. This position represents the Center for Student Rights and Responsibilities and University as appropriate.

Two full-time, permanent (probationary) positions available. This position is designated exempt under FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.

This position is physically located at the SDSU Main Campus in San Diego.

Education and Experience

Possession of the required knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of three years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience. One year in the program area to which assigned may be preferred but is not required.

A master’s degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a directly related field may be substituted for one year of experience. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling or guidance may be substituted for the three years of experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional career or personal counseling.

Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field, including or supplemented by upper division or graduate coursework in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution where such are job-related.

Preferred Qualifications

    Working experience in a highly diverse student environment.

    Communicator with conflict-mediation skills

    Relational leader with the ability to develop and maintain positive and compassionate working relationships with students, parents, faculty, employees, law enforcement, and other university constituents

    Understands the philosophy of student conduct, including the purpose of early intervention, the need to create a safe and productive living/learning environment, and the overall goal to retain our students whenever possible

    Team player in matters related to facilitating professional development, office dynamics, and necessary tasks

    Ability to present dynamic presentations about difficult and sensitive topics

    Ability to act in an unbiased, compassionate yet unemotional, firm, persuasive, and/or comforting manner, as appropriate

    Thorough knowledge of federal and state laws and regulations as they pertain to student conduct, including FERPA.

    Working knowledge of the organizational structure of the University and resources available to the University.

    Experience working with Maxient data management system.

    General knowledge of the methods and problems of organizational and program management.

    General knowledge of research and interview techniques; and of the principles of individual and group behavior.

    Demonstrated counseling-based/counseling-related skills.

    Ability to interpret and apply program rules and regulations.

    Use initiative and resourcefulness in planning work assignments and in implementing long-range program improvements.

    Obtain factual and interpretive information through interviews.

    Reason logically.

    Recognize multicultural, multi-gendered, and multi-aged value systems and work accordingly.

    Demonstrated ability to make decisions and carry through actions having implications with regard to other program or service areas Services Office.

    Demonstrated oral communication skills and ability to follow up with other departments and personnel to ensure accuracy of information.

    Experience interacting effectively with persons with hostile reactions, bringing them to an understanding and acceptance of disciplinary procedures. Experience dealing appropriately with matters of a highly confidential nature.

    Possess a high degree of initiative and ability to work independently.

    Knowledge of and demonstrated experience in legal and ethical student disciplinary practices.

Compensation and Benefits

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources. Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $5,025 per month.

CSU Classification Salary Range: $5,025 - $7,159 per month.

SDSU Vaccine Policy

In accordance with the California State University systemwide policy, students, faculty, and staff must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or provide a valid medical or religious exemption to access campus. Individuals are considered fully vaccinated for five months after their final dose of a two-dose COVID-19 vaccine or for two months after receiving the only dose of a single-dose vaccine. Afterward a COVID-19 booster is required to continue to be considered fully vaccinated.

The individual hired into this role will be required to submit their completed vaccination documentation to the university’s secure online health portal prior to beginning work. Individuals with an approved medical or religious exemption on file with the university will be required to participate in SDSU’s COVID-19 testing program.
