Job Summary: The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) Hollings Cancer Center (HCC, or Hollings) is looking to hire a full-time Assistant Director for the Community Outreach and Engagement program located in Charleston, SC.
This position will report to the Director of Community Outreach and Engagement (COE) and Associate Director of Population Sciences and Cancer Disparities (Dr. Marvella Ford).
This position will oversee other COE staff as well as graduate and undergraduate student assistants assigned to funded projects related to community outreach and cancer disparities.
Examples of Work Performed
While this position will reside within the Community Outreach and Engagement (COE) program at Hollings, the Assistant Director is expected to work closely with the HCC Cancer Center leadership, cancer program leaders, and the grant writing team. The distribution of responsibilities is expected to be:
- 35% - COE Program Management: Develop and sustain collaborative relationships and projects with community-based organizations (CBOs) serving the State of South Carolina, the HCC catchment area. Work closely with COE Director, COE staff, and funded project investigators and teams on initiatives, programs, and projects. Maintain tracking databases for all community engagement contacts, activities, and projects, including any related evaluation activities and metrics. Work closely with the COE team to develop community outreach, engagement, and research that advance the COE’s mission and vision. Coordinate regular cross-communication between the COE Director and other cancer program leaders to ensure maximum collaboration and enhance the COE’s impact on the SC population. - (Essential)
- 20% - COE Presentations & Writing: Work closely with COE Director, staff, university faculty/researchers, students, and community representatives in the development and submission of competitive funded proposals. Assist in writing, reviewing, and editing of COE grant proposals for submission to government agencies, foundations, and not-for-profit organizations Prepare written and oral reports required by the COE Director and Cancer Center leadership. Prepare and conduct presentations related to the COE’s community outreach, engagement, and research initiatives, programs, and projects. Attend relevant events and conferences locally and nationally related to the COE’s goals, activities, and requirements by the National Cancer Institute. When the COE Director cannot attend meetings, the incumbent will serve in her place. Seek and review funding opportunity notices (e.g., Request for Proposals) for compatibility with COE efforts and appraise the COE Director, staff, and collaborators of such notices. - (Essential)
- 20% - COE Funded Project Oversight: Responsible for achieving the goals, objectives, activities, and expected outcomes of assigned service or research projects. Assist the COE Director on the writing and submission of annual and final reports to the funding agencies and related project closure tasks. Oversee the preparation, submission, and final report to ClinicalTrials.gov Oversee the organization, creation, and maintenance of related project’s databases in REDCap, Excel, SPSS, SAS, and other relevant software. Develop, administer, and analyze assessment measures and evaluation metrics. Plan, coordinate, and conduct stakeholder and community advisory engagement activities related to projects. Coordinate and supervise site coordinators and other project staff to ensure assiduous oversight and management of the operational aspects of the project and data collection. Supervise the fidelity to project protocols and intervention implementation by working collaboratively with Cancer Center resources that provide study monitoring and auditing to ensure studies are conducted with accuracy. Oversee the creation and development of project-related materials and activities as well as any outcome measures or evaluation activities. Ensure project methods and materials are confidentially, literacy, and culturally appropriate. Supervise all project staff and student assistants to ensure the data collection is applied accurately and documented correctly. Organize and conduct project team meetings to update the team on the conduct of the project, identify issues that arise and problem-solve with the team, and participate in any case management reviews and discussions relevant to the research project. Work with principal investigators, project leads, and project team to ensure timely project progression and completion. Assist the COE Director in the regular communication with the university’s Office of Grants and Contracts, funding agencies, and other project oversight entities. - (Essential)
- 15% - COE Meeting Management: Plan, coordinate, and conduct community advisory board (CAB) and other community engagement activities related to the COE’s mission. Coordinate and conduct meetings, conferences, and related activities for the COE and assist other staff related to HCC Cancer Center activities. With the COE Director, Chair the Hollings Catchment Area Data Working Group - (Essential)
- 10% - COE Supervision & Business Operations: Supervise COE staff, including hiring, managing performance, and annual evaluations. Manage the business, agenda, and operations of the HCC Cancer Center’s Office of the COE. Foster and support undergraduate and graduate student involvement in the research development and implementation efforts of the COE - (Essential)
Preferred Experience & Additional Skills:
• Master's degree in public health, health professions, cancer-related fields and 5 years of experience; PhD preferred (PhD and post-doctoral experience in public health, behavioral health sciences, health professions, cancer-related fields)
• Experience managing multi-site community and/or research projects
• Project management certification beneficial
• Excellent science-based writing and presentation skills
• Knowledge and experience with federal, local, and/or foundation grant writing
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Knowledge of or willingness to learn about cancer-related Community-Based Participatory Research methods
• Knowledge of or willingness to learn about health maintenance and cancer prevention and control strategies
• Knowledge of or willingness to learn about social determinants of cancer health disparities
• Ability to work with diverse ethnically, socio-economically, and religious populations
• Knowledge of or willingness to learn about federal and university human subjects' research regulations
• Technical skills, including using computers, and command of software including Microsoft Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and REDCap, among others.
• Ability to travel as required by COE activities and funded projects with some overnight/evening and/or weekends
• Demonstrated experience working with community-based organizations
