The Trinity University Department of Communication seeks a Tenure Track Assistant Professor of Communication to begin Fall 2023, Ph.D. required by August start date. This individual will teach 6 undergraduate classes per year (17-20 contact hours) with primary teaching and research responsibilities in race, media, and communication, broadly defined, approached from any methodology. We seek a student-centered scholar with expertise in race, media, and communication; preference given to applicants with clear commitment to and experience engaging with real world issues.

Specifically, candidates would be expected to:

  • Develop and teach courses in race, media, and communication
  • Develop and teach special topics courses in their specific research area
  • Teach one of the core courses for the major: either COMM 1301 (Mass Media), a media industries course; or COMM 2302 (Media Texts), a course on media interpretation and criticism; or COMM 3303 (Media Audiences), a course on understanding the relationship between media and audiences
  • Contribute to teaching the First Year Experience or other courses in Pathways, the university’s interdisciplinary general education program
  • Have a productive research agenda
  • Be an active participant in the Inclusive Communities Cluster, attending regular meetings and seeking opportunities for collaboration
  • Engage in service to the department, the university, and the greater San Antonio community.

A successful candidate will have a demonstrated record of teaching expertise, a passion for mentoring and working with undergraduate students, and an active research plan.

Embracing the liberal arts and sciences mission of the university, the Department of Communication stresses an integrated, non-sequenced approach to its curriculum. Students in Communication at Trinity build their major upon three core courses: Mass Media, Media Texts, and Media Audiences. They complete the major by undertaking a Senior Capstone Seminar where they synthesize their understanding of communication theories and practices into a substantial academic, professional, or creative project.

Inclusive Communities Cluster: This search is part of a cluster hire focused on Building Inclusive Communities, which seeks to recruit, amplify, connect, and empower teacher-scholars whose work contributes to addressing the grand challenge of building and sustaining inclusive communities. Additional tenure-track faculty positions will be advertised as part of the cluster, with the goal of recruiting a diverse interdisciplinary faculty cohort whose research, experience, and interests will benefit from collaboration and intentional support, including individual and group research startup funding.
