Job Description

Under the direction of the Department Chair, the Faculty member will engage in both administrative and teaching duties, including serving on dissertation committees.

Position responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Teaching classes, developing, and revising curriculum in functional nutrition utilizing the latest developments and trends in classroom instruction and digital technology
  • Ensure rigorous academic standards and quality aligned with program goals
  • Serving as content expert on integrative and functional nutrition on dissertation committees.
  • Education and mentoring other faculty on integrative and functional nutrition science and practice.
  • Responsive and timely communication with Department Chair
  • Hosting New Student Orientation, Prospective Student Call with the Admissions Department, and Residential/Educational Conferences
  • Mentoring students and advising assigned Students at least once a semester
  • Monitor student recruitment, retention, and matriculation
  • Contribute to departmental and college governance
  • Actively participate in degree and departmental meetings
  • Represent program on university-wide committees
  • Participate in the accreditation and, when appropriate, budget process
  • Contribute to strategic planning and programmatic growth
  • Maintain effective professional and community involvement and/or affiliations as ambassador for the University

Faculty Engagement Expectations

All Faculty members at Saybrook University are expected to be available and responsive to students.

Faculty engagement expectations include:

  • Following through on student inquiries and requests as it relates to academic progress.
  • Teaching specific courses and serving on student dissertation research committees.
  • Utilize university offered resources (i.e., Office of Teaching and Learning) to maintain technology skills specific and appropriate to each program and process.
  • Faculty will contact students enrolled in their course within the first week of the new semester and prior to residential and educational conferences.
  • Faculty will respond to emails, Canvas Inbox, and phone calls within two (2) business days.
  • Faculty are expected to be available via Calendly for students to schedule timely one-on-one appointments. Faculty should be available via Calendly at least three hours per week.
  • For courses with weekly discussions, faculty will be in contact with students at least three times per week for online courses to provide substantive contributions and respond to student posts. This will include engagement across the duration of the weekly discussions.
  • For individually mentored courses, faculty will schedule with each student regular communication.
  • Faculty will return student papers with feedback for assignments submitted through Canvas within the following guidelines (applicable to discussion questions, MS capstones, and dissertations):
    • 1 week for work less than 5 pages in length
    • 2 weeks for work up to 25 pages in length
    • 3 weeks for work 26-50 pages in length
    • 4 weeks for work over 50 pages in length
  • All coursework must be graded prior to the deadline in the academic calendar. Grades must be submitted via the academic portal prior to the grade submission deadlines.

Position Requirements

  • Doctorate degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher learning.
  • Expertise in integrative and functional nutrition (i.e., systems biology, functional nutrition laboratory testing, nutritional genomics).
    • Please describe integrative and functional nutrition expertise in your cover letter.
  • Demonstrated scholarship, research projects, and/or professional accomplishments in the field of integrative and functional nutrition.
  • Relevant supervision and teaching experience at the doctoral level, with preference for those with past supervision of dissertation research.
  • Commitment to multicultural and humanistic principles.
  • Knowledge of higher education best practices.
  • Experience with ethnically diverse and/or other special populations.
  • Some travel may be required.
  • Collegial attitude and willingness to work within a matrix organization.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills.
  • High level proficiency with Microsoft Office, Microsoft OneDrive, and at least one online learning platform.
  • Engage in ongoing technology education and adoption of new systems and processes.
