Job Responsibilities


The Student Development Counselor provides individual and group counseling services to enrolled and prospective students in the area of personal, crisis intervention, career development, life-planning, and academic placement and support services, as well as counseling and related services for current and prospective students with disabilities. In addition, the counselor teaches career development courses, educates students, faculty, and other staff about ADA(AA) and Section 504 related services, develops, implements and evaluates special programs. Works with/Lead Counselor, supervisor, students, faculty, and other staff in an effective, collaborative manner.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

This position requires a bachelor's degree with experience in student services programs.

Preferred Qualifications

A bachelor's or master's in Counseling, Psychology, Social Work or related field with two (2) years related work experience is preferred. Knowledge of counseling theory and practice, college student development theory, career development theory, the criteria for allowing accommodations under the ADA(AA) and section 504 of the Rehabilitative Act, substance abuse, and alcohol and related issues is essential. Ideal candidates will be able to effectively balance advocacy, counseling, compliance, consultative, and service roles. This position must be able to work well with a diverse student and faculty population and is responsible for providing individual and group counseling services to enrolled and prospective students in the areas of personal, crisis intervention, career development, life planning, and academic placement and support services, as well as counseling and related services for current and prospective students with disabilities. This position will also be expected to teach career development courses; conduct workshops/presentations on study skills, personal growth, and other relevant student issues; educate students, faculty, and other staff about the ADA(AA) and Section 504 related services; and develop, implement and evaluate special programs.
