Job Summary The University Exploration and Advising Center (UEAC) invites applications for an Academic Advisor! Successful candidates will establish relationships with students and encourage success by providing multidisciplinary academic and developmental advising for exploratory undergraduates with interests across all colleges and schools. This role partners with academic advisors and coaches in the University Exploration and Advising Center (UEAC). This first-year advising role works with specific student populations to empower and support them in exploration and decision-making toward their choice of a major and an outlay of goals for their collegiate career at CU-Boulder and beyond.
Students with whom this position will specialize include those who were not admitted to their college of choice, prospective students, international students, and transfer students; populations that finds themselves between colleges or in need of campus-wide exploration.
The Academic Advisor position focuses on exploration, discovery, and supportive connection with students, which requires a specialized knowledge base across many fields as well as a keen understanding of related functional areas. Other important aspects of this role include liaising with individuals and departments across campus, a dedication to professional growth and development, and strong dedication to team collaboration and innovation.

Who We Are The University Exploration & Advising Center (UEAC) is a first-year advising unit at CU Boulder designed to work with students in exploring and transitioning to a variety of academic paths. The UEAC partners with all the colleges on campus and works with students in discovering any number of interests and possible outcomes while at CU Boulder. The unit primarily serves students specifically assigned to UEAC advisors, but also offers support to various other transitioning student groups on campus. The UEAC is part of the Office of Undergraduate Education (UE), whose charge is to examine the entire undergraduate student experience, assess outcomes, identify gaps, and launch and support student-facing campus initiatives. What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be Student Support:
  • Individual and small group work with students (via scheduled appointments, walk-ins, phone and email interactions) and related administrative duties; student traffic will vary over the course of the year so included in this role is proactive outreach and engagement with students who have not been in for an appointment and/or are in academic difficulty. Advisors will follow all advising protocols and apply campus advising tools such as Buff Portal Advising and maintain a multidisciplinary knowledge base.
  • Advisors will:
    • Assist students in planning for and making informed decisions about a choice of major, intended college outcomes, and potential career or graduate school direction.
    • Help students to assess their interests, values and academic skills.
    • Guide students in navigating the systems, academic processes and policies at CU-Boulder.
    • Work with students to personalize their academic path, including offering cocurricular guidance that complements their goals and leading them in effective long term planning.
    • Advisors also offer availability to students’ overall support network, including parents. In addition to one-on-one interactions, the individual in this position will work with students in group settings via workshops, presentations, and for-credit courses such as FYXP 1500: Student Success Seminar and FYXP 1000: Academic Exploration & Critical Decision Making.
Cross-Campus First Year Advising Network:
  • Actively engage in planning and collaboration as a member of the cross-campus First Year Advising Network. Assist with the development of first year advising student learning outcomes and ongoing assessment. Participate in critical initiatives and goals related to campus-wide first-year advising. Ensure alignment with key elements of the first-year advising model. Proactively develop knowledge of standard processes related to first-year student transition, retention, and advising. Share and work to implement practices aligned with that knowledge.
Planning Strategically & Student Success Initiatives:
  • Planning and collaboration with the UEAC team, including regular team meetings, trainings and evaluation. This will include targeted meetings with specific constituents as well as attendance at greater organizational meetings and participation in cross-campus committees as needed.
Professional Development:
  • Professional development that may include: relevant conferences, mentoring opportunities, coursework, workshops, and research.

  • All University of Colorado Boulder employees are required to comply with the campus COVID-19 vaccine requirement. New employees must provide proof of vaccination or receive a medical or religious exemption within 30 days of employment.
  • This full time position is expected to work in a hybrid work modality, with at least 3 days in person, and 2 days remote.
  • Full time hours during normal campus schedule; some evening or weekend work is possible.


What We Can Offer
  • The salary range for this position is $48,000-$55,000.

What We Require
  • Completed Bachelor’s degree and minimum of one (1) year of professional, related advising experience; OR a completed Master’s Degree. Equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute.
  • Experience with student success initiatives.

What We Would Like You To Have
  • Bachelor’s degree and three (3) years of professional, related experience; OR a completed Master’s degree in higher education administration, student affairs, or related field and one (1) year of professional, related experience working with students outside the classroom.
  • Experience managing student success initiatives in a higher education setting.
  • Classroom teaching experience.
  • Experience working with students on the CU Boulder campus and familiarity with CU Boulder majors, minors, and certificate programs and undergraduate policies and processes.
  • Experience managing parent concerns.
  • Experience applying student development theory.
