Director Civil Rights Compliance/Deputy Title IX Coordinator

The University of Tennessee, Knoxville is seeking a Director of Civil Rights Compliance/Deputy Title IX Coordinator to serve within the Office of Equity & Diversity (OED). OED is part of the Division of Diversity and Engagement and fulfills an important compliance function by working with various legal mandates by the state and federal governments and university policies related to civil rights, equal employment, and affirmative action.  OED provides leadership and services that support a culture of inclusivity, respect and accountability.

Reporting to the associate vice chancellor of diversity & engagement/executive director of the Office of Equity & Diversity, the director serves as the senior investigator, the deputy Title IX coordinator and a member of OED's senior leadership team. As a member of the senior leadership team, the director assists in the establishment of goals, initiatives, training, priorities, policies, and strategic planning for Knoxville area units (UT-Knoxville, UT Space Institute, UT Institute of Agriculture, UT Foundation, Institute for Public Service, Athletics and UT System) Civil Rights compliance.  

Primary areas of functionality and accountability:

Leadership & Management: The director will oversee, manage and lead a team of assistant directors/investigators with regard to formal and informal resolutions of complaints of discrimination and harassment. It is critical that the director manage timely and thorough equal employment and civil rights related formal and informal resolutions from intake through issuance of the final report.

Writing & Reporting: The director will be accountable for developing professionally written, comprehensive, accurate, detailed, unbiased reports that include a summary of facts, conclusions and recommendations for corrective or mitigative action. Reviews investigators’ reports to evaluate, edit and ensure clarity, sound analysis and reasonable conclusions and outcomes.

Operations: The director will manage the daily operations of OED’s formal and informal resolutions team and represent of the office across the university via committees, working groups and task forces.  The director conducts mediations and informal interventions to assist units in moving beyond the source of conflict. The position will assist the AVC/Executive Director in interpreting University obligations under Titles VI, VII and IX, the ADA and ADEA as well as other state and federal civil rights regulations and guidelines.

Educational Development: The director assists with development and delivery of equity and accessibility programs. The position will support content creation to inform constituents about investigative procedures and processes, the rights and responsibilities of parties and applicable policies.

Qualifications
Required Education & Experience:

A doctoral degree (JD, Ph.D, Ed.D) and experience typically gained by 6 years professional experience OR a master’s degree and experience typically gained by 10 years professional experience.

Preferred Experience:

Higher education experienceProfessional licensure (law, mediation, etc)
