Minimum Qualifications:

Requires technical knowledge in the field acquired through an apprenticeship, a 2-year degree, or professional certificate. Please contact your Human Resources office for an evaluation of education/experience in lieu of the required minimum qualifications.

Preferred Qualifications:

Master’s degree in Libraries, Archives, or CED fields preferred but not required.

Position Summary:

This position is hired and reports to the College of Environment and Design (CED). The Owens Library is a resource of the College of Environment and Design with its staff, collections, and space funded by CED.The Owens Library and Resource Center is a community-centered space that brings together the library and IT resources that support the varied design and research work of CED. Library and IT staff work collaboratively on the operations and direction of the Resource Center.Our print collection is comprised of 5000 volumes related to the built environment. Particular emphasis is placed on foundational and recent works in the fields of landscape architecture, plants and gardens, Georgia community design, urban planning, and historic preservation.The Owens Library collection is included in the state-wide ILS (Alma integrated library system). UGA Libraries provide cataloging, acquisitions, and circulation support for print items added to the Owens collection. Relevant online databases, electronic journal subscriptions, and eBooks are provided through the UGA Libraries. Instruction and reference support are provided by a UGA-funded librarian.Future directions for the Owens Library include digitization of pre-2000 theses and capstone projects, increasing the presence of CED faculty and student publication in ScholarWorksUGA (UGA’s institutional repository), digitizing and curating select items from the CED archives, and ideas brought by the new incumbent in this position.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Integrate graduate assistants into the Owens library workflows:

  • Assign projects
  • Training on Owens processes
  • Sharing daily oversight with Owens Resource Center Supervisor
Collection and services:
  • Maintain collection policy and scope
  • Provide front-line reference/research assistance, develop programs, etc
  • Selection and purchasing of new materials based on input from the CED community.
  • Review and deselection of materials to remove from the Owens collection
  • POC for book donations, including determining the disposition of items
  • Book displays and promotions

  • Prioritize and assess collections for digitization
  • Set workflows
  • Pursue grants and other funding for digitization staffing (graduate or undergraduate)
  • Coordinate with Digital Library of Georgia and Athenaeum and CED Technology Services.

  • On-going assessment of the efficacy of space and collections
