Work Location:

Salary Range:

$45,250 - $50,000

Primary Purpose of Department:

Our mission is to deliver bachelors, masters, and doctoral programs in a research intensive environment that provides students with the opportunity to develop state-of-the-art technical skills, a practice-ready orientation, and extraordinary character. We leverage our urban location in Charlotte to provide students and faculty with unique opportunities in all aspects of electrical and computer engineering, including communications, control systems, signal processing, computer hardware and software, electronic devices and circuits, and power and energy systems.

Primary Purpose of Position:

The ECE Advising Center serves both undergraduate and graduate students within the department’s academic programs, students in transition, and to prospective high school and transfer students in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department. The primary purpose of the Center is providing academic advising using a developmental model. Using a developmental model approach, Academic Advisors in the Center work with students so that students develop the knowledge and skills and personal accountability needed to explore their academic and co-curricular options, evaluate and track their own progress toward graduation, access support and enrichment services, and understand and follow university policies and timelines. Advising services encompass a range of interactions with students from individual and small group meetings to email and social media, among others. The Center also provides orientation to new students, support to first-generation college students and transfer students, intervention programs for at-risk students, and graduate students. ECE advisors have the ability to work autonomously in a complex, team-oriented academic office with significant student traffic, have a commitment to student success and the ability to listen and analyze academic needs, will collaborate with faculty in Electrical and Computer Engineering Department to provide additional information/services/programming to majors, will participate in new student orientations (SOAR), Majors Day, EXPLORE UNC Charlotte, and other events as necessary, generate reports on academic progression, graduation-oriented advising, and develop a thorough working knowledge of campus support services and referral processes.

Summary of Position Responsibilities:

The entry-level academic advisor is primarily an implementer of a developmental advising model that involves a tailored series of interactions and communications using advising tools and systems designed to address the specific needs of the students served by the ECE Advising Center. This tailored, developmental approach acknowledges that individual student profiles and those of student cohorts may differ not only at the onset of the student academic experience, but throughout their academic career. The advisor must have the experience, education, and background necessary to serve the educational function of an advisor, however he or she is doing so in a context developed by the Center and in collaboration with more experienced colleagues and the Director. Specific functional areas include:
• Academic advising
• Orientation and outreach
• Targeted advising
• Student services support to graduate students in ECE
• Commitment to student success and the ability to listen and analyze academic needs.
• Collaboration with faculty in Electrical and Computer Engineering Department to provide additional information/services/programming to majors
• Reporting on academic progression and graduation-oriented advising
• Thorough working knowledge of campus support services and referral processes

Minimum Education/Experience:

Education: A master’s degree in academic advising, student services, higher education, engineering, or a related field is required. Experience: two years of experience involving student academic advising in a higher education setting.
The candidate must also be attentive to detail, possess strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize while multi-tasking and manage tasks in an efficient and timely manner. Excellent communication and interpersonal problem-solving skills are a must. Ability to interact effectively with advisees, staff, and faculty required. A viable candidate must comprehend and abide by federal and university student confidentiality requirements. Proficient use of computers (Microsoft Access, Excel, Word, Powerpoint) is necessary.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

A working knowledge of BANNER, Connect, and DegreeWorks or other academic advising systems is a plus.

Overview of the UNC Charlotte Plan for Campus Diversity, Access and Inclusion.

The goal of quality education for all at UNC Charlotte is the foundation for our Diversity Plan.  At its fullest potential, higher education allows students to interact with people from different backgrounds and to engage a range of ideas and perspectives.  This educational experience cultivates the skills that graduates will need to function adeptly in a global society.

As North Carolina and the Charlotte region undergo rapid population growth and demographic change, UNC Charlotte must respond to the needs of a more diverse student population. It is imperative that the University prepare its students to become leaders and thriving citizens in a pluralistic and multicultural society. In adopting our Diversity Plan, we affirm that:

  •

    • We believe that a diverse faculty, staff and student body are critical in advancing teaching, scholarship, and community engagement at UNC Charlotte.
    • We are committed to enhancing opportunities for living, working and learning in a diverse environment
    • We are committed to educating our students to interact effectively and respectfully in the global community.

The Plan identifies components of a diverse campus community and outlines steps toward building an inclusive environment that promotes the success of all students, faculty, and staff. It is a living document that affirms our institutional values and is designed to offer guidance to University departments and units for achieving the University goals for diversity.  The seven broad objectives of the Diversity Plan are:

1: Promote a broad understanding of goals for diversity, access, and inclusion for the University through active outreach to the campus community.

2: Recruit and graduate a diverse student body that reflects community diversity and addresses the state’s need to increase access to higher education for historically underrepresented and economically disadvantaged students.

3: Increase the recruitment of underrepresented faculty and advance their progression through the faculty ranks.

4: Increase the representation of staff from underrepresented groups.

5: Ensure the presence of institutional environments and course development that enhance learning and appreciation for the full range of diversity.

6: Develop external relationships with the community to enhance diversity on and off campus.

7: Ensure the Success of the Plan through Assessment, Accountability, and Recognition.
