Job Description Summary

The University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School is one of the nation’s oldest and most distinguished law schools. The Institute for Law & Economics is a leading center for corporate law, governance, business, and finance. Housed in the Law School, it reflects collaboration between Penn Carey Law, the Wharton School, and the Department of Economics. Through its programming and the scholarship of its faculty directors, ILE contributes significantly to policy and practice on important issues that affect business and financial institutions world-wide.

The Executive Director of ILE works closely with the Institute faculty Co-Directors to develop and implement a rich agenda of programming, to communicate and amplify the relevance of faculty scholarship to practitioners and policy makers as well as to academics, and to promote and steward the organization. The Executive Director identifies, recommends, and oversees a portfolio of programs and is supported in implementing them by a variety of Penn Carey Law administrative offices (Conferences and Events, Faculty Support, Communications, Development and Alumni Relations).

With a background in corporate practice, the Executive Director brings industry knowledge to the work of ILE. After mastery of the position’s core functions, the Executive Director may have the opportunity, if desired, to also engage in scholarship and/or teaching.

Job Description

The Executive Director’s responsibilities include:

Strategic Program Development and Event Administration

  • With the faculty Co-Directors and based on business and legal developments in corporate law, corporate governance, securities regulation, mergers & acquisitions, and related topics, identify and prioritize topics for ILE programming and engagement.
  • Build and foster relationships with legal and industry professionals, regulators, policymakers and academics and facilitate their participation in ILE events.
  • Assume leadership role in developing ILE programming including:
  • Identifying and arranging participation by speakers and attendees,
  • Organizing programming structure, timing and logistics.
  • Oversee implementation of ILE’s ambitious agenda of programs and activities.
  • Direct the Law School’s Conferences and Events team around calendaring, invitation lists, and design and delivery of promotional materials,
  • Oversee budget and financial aspects of programming including catering and participant reimbursement,
  • Ensure day-of coverage of all event needs,
  • Personally participate in all ILE events.

Communications and Development

  • Represent ILE to Board members and other contributors, faculty, students, visitors, and program participants, with an eye to cultivating ILE’s reputation of excellence.
  • Manage the relationship with the Law School’s Communications and Development teams to design and implement strategies for the publication of ILE research and communication about its multi-faceted programming.
  • Compose and publish original content to further ILE’s visibility and reputation, including developing substantive content (articles, social media, etc.) for the ILE website and for periodic newsletters,
  • Ensure regular inclusion of ILE research and programming in Penn Carey Law communications vehicles,
  • Respond to requests from Communications regarding media inquiries about faculty scholarship as well as inquiries from academics, lawyers, donors, and others.
  • Supervise the implementation and updating of the ILE website as well as other related ILE websites (WIBLI, Delaware Corporate Law Resource Center, and the Lipton Archive).
  • Work with ITS, Faculty Support, and external vendors to ensure rich and up to date content on all sites.
  • Serve as the primary architect on the drafting, design, and production of ILE’s Annual Report.
  • Manage relationships with ILE Board Members, potential new ILE Board members and other external professionals.

Administrative

  • Ensure the efficient daily operations of ILE.
  • Work collaboratively with Faculty Support and with Conferences and Events to complete the work of the Institute.
  • Maintain ongoing communication with faculty co-directors to identify programming and strategic timelines and objectives.
  • Oversee budgeting and monitor revenues and expenditures for conformity to the budget.
  • Hire and manage work-study students, other part-time assistants, and external service providers such as photographers.

Qualifications: J.D. required, practice experience in corporate, M&A or securities law highly valued. Portfolio of program and/or content development in one or more of such fields a plus. Ability to identify and create board-oriented and public programming and to assist the faculty Co-Directors in engaging and preparing panelists and guest speakers. Applicant should have an established track record as collaborator in the workplace, within the immediate department and within a larger institution, including the ability to delegate to and supervise administrative support staff.

Salary offers are made based on the candidate’s qualifications, experience, skills, and education as they directly relate to the requirements of the position, as well as internal and market factors and grade profile.
