Position Summary

Position Summary

This position is responsible for managing the Residence Education and Housing Services (REHS) Outreach unit as they develop strong connections and effective collaboration between campus partners and the department to achieve departmental, divisional and university goals. The Assistant Director also oversees the MSU Tours team that helps to share the MSU story with a diverse group of prospective students, incoming students, their supporters, university guests and MSU community members.

• Initiates outreach and collaboration necessary to advance the Division of Student Life & Engagement (SLE) and department of REHS as a strategic partner with Admissions, Athletics, Undergraduate Education, International Studies and Programs, and other campus departments.

• Serves as the REHS liaison to divisional partners such as Culinary Services and Student Involvement and Leadership, and university partners such as New Student Orientation, Contact MSU, MSU Alumni Office, Student Health and Wellness, and other constituent groups.

• Develops and manages Memorandums of Agreement with Admissions, Athletics, and other partners requesting REHS and MSU Tours services and resources, in collaboration with REHS leadership.

• Oversees the MSU Tours program, with team members consisting of around 100 undergraduate student tour guides and student supervisors, two graduate assistants and two professional staff. Ensures the team recruits and retains a diverse workforce in alignment with current MSU student demographics, and centers and uplifts the voices and multiple lived experiences of the most marginalized.

• Works with department colleagues to develop and promote inclusive programs, activities and communication to support parents, supporters and staff.

• Identifies opportunities for expansion/growth of the REHS and SLE outreach and messages to marginalized communities.

• Leads campus partner communications and outreach under the direction of the REHS Associate Director for Communications.

• Maintains housing and dining information for prospective and admitted families and campus partners under the direction of the Associate Director for Administration.

• Connects with multiple MSU and community partners for the purpose of advancing MSU as an anti-racist, anti-oppressive, multicultural university that is invested in developing a sense of belonging and restorative care across underserved student communities.

• Encourages, seeks and shares authentic feedback from partners, colleagues, team members and guests; develops, implements, and monitors customer feedback systems.

• Using an equity lens, troubleshoots and provides recommendations when issues arise between a stakeholder and REHS or MSU Tours functions.

• Monitors student trends and changing conditions and ensures the department is responding to opportunities to equitably support a diverse student body and their success.

• Develops short term and long-range objectives in order to achieve staff development goals.

• Develops, implements, and monitors unit policies, standards, and procedures in order to maintain an equitable application of policies and standards.

• Maintains a high level of engagement, visibility and accessibility to stakeholders and unit staff.

• Maintains involvement in university and national industry-specific professional organizations.

• Oversees annual budget, travel planning and onboarding/training for REHS Outreach.

Communications/Interpersonal Relationships - Interacts with:

• Faculty/Staff/Students - in order to determine training and educational needs, analyze, develop and implement instructional programs.

• Outside Administrators - in order to implement internships, coordinate and oversee training and educational programs.

• Department Staff - in order to coordinate activities, review work, exchange information and solve problems.

• Supervisor - in order to exchange information, receive assignments and review current projects.

• Vendors - in order to solicit product specifications and technical advice and coordinate project activities.

Responsibility for the Work of Others

First level supervision over regular employees.

Work Hours

Monday through Friday 8am-5pm, with occasional nights and weekends.

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in Communications, Public Relations, Business, Management and/or related field; five to eight years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in senior management position; understanding of student government structure, student programming, training, development and working in a higher educational setting; understanding of formal and informal university organizational structures and academic governance; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired Qualifications

Five to eight years of progressively more responsible or expansive work in higher education administration, public relations, communications or related field; previous university housing, dining and/or campus tour experience; demonstrated success in engaging with both internal and external audiences; excellent written and verbal communication skills, and ability to present to racially, ethnically, socioeconomically, LGBTQIA2S+, and other marginalized communities; experience working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, socioeconomic, LGBTQIA2S+, and gender backgrounds; ability to lead a diverse team with different social identities and learning/communication styles; excellent attention to detail and problem‐solving skills; strong, identity-conscious supervisory skills; demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication skills; experience with Microsoft Office 365 suite.

Additional Qualifications

  • May require valid vehicle operator’s license where needed to perform duties of the position.
  • Other skills and/or physical abilities required to perform duties of the position.
  • Knowledge of basic personal computer terminology and operations, and the ability to use e-mail and the internet.
