Job Description:

This position assists with the implementation of publicity campaigns for books published by the State University System Press (University Press of Florida), including helping secure book reviews and other media coverage, maintaining the Press’s author events calendar, and contributing social media content. The publicity assistant also contributes to the Press’s external communications strategy, helping communicate about the activities of the Press as a whole to a variety of audiences. The publicity assistant also performs routine clerical tasks related to the marketing and promotion of up to 90 new books per year and a backlist of more than 3,000 books and assists the sales and marketing team with a variety of tasks that increase the efficiency of the team in general. This position requires strong skills in organization, prioritization, and time management. Excellent writing skills are essential.

This is a full-time position eligible for benefits including health and dental insurance and paid time off. Presence in Gainesville area required. This position is not eligible to be fully remote, though a hybrid in-person/remote work schedule is possible. This position attends occasional local author events and in-state book festivals as a Press representative.

Book Publicity Assistance

  • Writes marketing copy and social media content and drafts email marketing projects for review by the Marketing Manager;
  • Assists with research, correspondence, and clerical tasks related to the solicitation of advance praise for books;
  • Researches, organizes, and develops media lists and contacts;
  • Maintains Press events calendar and helps promote upcoming events;
  • Helps coordinate the content calendar for the Press social media accounts (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, WordPress);
  • Maintains Press database with excerpts from reviews received and other publicity highlights;
  • Processes and regularly reports media coverage for Press books;
  • Assists with outreach to authors, media, and bookstores, media database maintenance, and publicity-related clerical tasks;
  • Attends occasional local author events and in-state book festivals as a Press representative.

Press Communications Assistance

  • Assists the Marketing Manager and Director in implementing the Press’s external communications strategy;
  • Assists in planning and creating the Press’s monthly e-newsletters;
  • Drafts content for other external-facing platforms and channels as needed;
  • Assisting in the promotion of publishing symposiums and other events hosted by the Press.

Marketing Department Support

  • Corresponds with authors, customers, media, vendors/partners, and others, and fulfills requests in a timely and professional manner;
  • Researches sales and marketing leads;
  • Handles assorted clerical duties, including filing, mailing, and data entry.
Expected Salary:

$15.00 per hour.

Minimum Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area or equivalent combination of education, training,
and experience.

Valid driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications:

Strong working knowledge of Windows, Microsoft Office Suite (especially Word and
Excel), database programs (such as Access or FileMaker), and social media platforms
(Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, WordPress, etc.).

Writes clearly and engagingly for a variety of audiences (e.g. marketing copy, press releases, and blog posts).

Strong skills in organization, prioritization, and time management.

Works both independently and as part of a team to meet deadlines.

Familiarity with Adobe Photoshop and Adobe InDesign.
