Assistant Professor of Educational Counseling

Job Description Summary:
The LaFetra College of Education (LFCE) at the University of La Verne invites applications for a 10-month, full-time, non-tenure track faculty position at the rank of assistant professor of Educational Counseling. The Educational Counseling Program emphasizes school counselor training with concentrations in a Pupil Personnel Services Credential (California), Spanish Bilingual Bicultural Certification (SBBC), Social Justice in Higher Education (SJHE) and School and Family Based Counseling (LPCC license-eligibility).

The Educational Counseling program is seeking a candidate with a strong emphasis in diversity, social justice, and advocacy as well as knowledge in developing, implementing, and evaluating comprehensive school counseling programs. Candidates must have practical knowledge in the American School Counseling Association (ASCA) National Model and Ethics Code.

Specific Duties:
Administrative Duties

  • Engage in teaching on the main campus and/or regional campus locations in the Educational Counseling program to meet program and student needs.
  • Potential for candidate to assume various leadership roles within the program as assigned by the program chair, including leadership of academic advisement of program students.
  • Participate in oversight of state credentialing (CCTC) and accreditation requirements for the Educational Counseling and PPS program, as well as university program reviews.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with PK-12 districts.
  • Coordinates where appropriate or participates in Student Study Team meetings or other interventions as needed for ECSP students
  • Completes appropriate data collection processes as needed for program review, accreditation purposes and CTC mandates
  • Oversee the Intern application process, including screening, interviewing and collaborating with Credential Analysts for intern recommendations
  • Develops community partnerships through attendance at community events, support for district induction programs, and program promotion and recruitment in local districts
  • Maintains regular contact and communication with regional faculty and main campus faculty
  • Attendance at university, college, department, and program meetings
  • Service on college or university committees as appointed by Dean and/or program chair, other duties as assigned.

Teaching
  • Keeps up with developments in the field of study
  • Demonstrates high standards, both academically and professionally
  • Evaluates student work constructively and provides timely feedback
  • Plans, develops, and uses effective teaching methods and materials which assists students in meeting course objectives, that are appropriate for students with diverse educational and experiential backgrounds and learning styles, and engages the students in learning
  • Provides access to students through posted office hours, electronic communication, and other appropriate methods of communication; ensuring to respond to inquiries in a timely manner
  • Reviews, evaluates, and recommends student learning materials
  • Develops and uses a syllabus and course information materials for each course, laboratory, or clinical setting within state, college, and departmental guidelines

Professional Development
  • Maintains high standards of competence in the discipline(s) and teaching methodologies through professional development activities
  • Reviews, evaluates, reflects, and revises teaching methods through a process of self-reflection
  • Participates in the annual growth plan process for the LaFetra College of Education
  • Meets or exceeds professional standards and discipline-specific requirements, as appropriate to the discipline


Minimum Qualifications:
  • Master’s Degree in Education or related field
  • Valid CA PPS Credential – School Counseling
  • 3 – 5 years school counseling experience in PK-12
  • Experience in teaching and/or working with adult learners


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Doctorate in Education or related field
  • Providing school counseling and/or school psychology services to students in an urban setting
  • Bilingual in Spanish, or other languages common in California’s student demographics
