Detailed Description:
This is a part-time temporary, non-benefit based position with an anticipated end date of June 30, 2023. Appointment is renewable at the discretion of the University and dependent upon continued funding of institute projects.

Funded by the National Science Foundation, the Collaborative Research Project SPAC3: A Culturally Relevant Approach to Spatial Computational Thinking Skills and Career Awareness through an Immersive Virtual Environment is a four year project to develop an immersive culturally relevant enactive learning experience in Minecraft: Education Edition to foster upper-elementary Latinx students' spatial computational thinking skills and awareness of computationally-intensive careers.

Candidates should consider themselves learning-centered educators, creators, change agents, and risk-takers who have a commitment to educational equity. This is an in-person, San Diego-based position. We are a Google-based institute.

Duties and Responsibilities

Program Development
  • Provide program leadership by co-designing and managing program agenda and goals.
  • Support the development of an immersive, culturally relevant enactive learning experience.
  • Develop programs that provide hands-on opportunities for students foster upper-elementary Latinx students' spatial computational thinking skills and awareness of computationally-intensive careers.
  • Identify and cultivate funding sources for continued growth and sustainability of the SPAC3 initiative.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of significant developments and trends in the fields of interest.
  • Create and maintain connections with STEM professionals and consultants to support the development of the SPAC3 initiative.

Teaching and Instructional Design
  • Support the development program for college student near-peer mentors to support the SPAC3 program.
  • Use researched-based best practices and Collaborative Education strategies, in conjunction with federal law, state law, the University of San Diego's mission, vision and values.
  • Foster students'/families' exploration by establishing norms and expectations that provide connection, consistency and compassion.
  • Communicate necessary information regularly and effectively to students, families, supervisor, the Jacobs Institute, collaborators, and the University of San Diego, as needed.
  • Learn and use relevant technology to effectively support the program.
  • Support the preparation of the online experience and maintain an organized and supportive learning environment.
  • Maintain high academic standards and expectations while simultaneously supporting students', families' and college student near-peer mentors' social emotional learning.
  • Provide an executive summary of program facilitation.
  • Provide detailed information for reports, presentations, etc.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Program Management
  • Work closely with the Principal Investigator and JI administrative team to coordinate near-peer mentors' work schedules, purchases and supplies for the SPAC3 Program.
  • Provide guidance and strategic direction to near-peer mentors and STEM professionals involved in the project.
  • Create, support and Identify professional development opportunities for team members to build the collective capacity of the organization.
  • Recruit, train and supervise SPACE near-peer mentors and prepare materials needed for the studies.
  • Recruit, manage and support SPACE student and family participants.
  • Create a website for the project SPAC3 and maintain it up to date, and regularly share SPAC3 information on social media.

Research
  • Support thorough literature review and information research, utilizing institution library, archives, and collections, internet-based information, and other sources of information, to collect, record, analyze, and evaluate facts.
  • Support field research through interviews, surveys, focus groups and other site methodologies to collect, record, analyze, and evaluate facts.
  • Support research that generates new knowledge and inform practices.
  • Support the preparation of project proposals.
  • Support the dissemination of information related to JI research and evaluation projects to research, practitioner, policy, and/or stakeholder communities through publications, presentations, workshops, forums, and/or social media. Support the preparation of conference proposals, journal articles, and/or technical reports, papers, or records.

Job Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree with equivalent work experience
  • Excellent program management, interpersonal and communication skills, and attention to detail.
  • Broad awareness of the issues and challenges confronting K-16 education and experience with the challenges of introducing innovative educational practices.
  • Passion for advancing educational equity
  • Teaching experience
  • Willingness to engage in productive struggle

Preferred Qualifications
  • Teaching Credential
  • Masters degree in Education
  • Experience or interest in paper folding and technology
  • Experience with Minecraft
  • Experience working with Latinx Communities
  • Ability to speak/write in Spanish
