Associate Director, Community Management

The American Council on Education (ACE) is a membership organization that mobilizes the higher education community to shape effective public policy and foster innovative, high-quality practice. Through the work of ACE Connect, the Council manifests its mission and strategic priorities by uniting stakeholders within higher education to identify key issues, catalyze communities, and harness collective energy to enhance what is and create what can be. Key catalytic communities include the 10,000-member ACE Women’s Network and the 2,000+ Alumni of the ACE Fellows program as well as association partners such as the National Association of Presidential Assistants in Higher Education (NAPAHE) and the Association of Chief Academic Officers (ACAO).  Further, new peer communities with common interest continue to emerge – e.g., mental health, civic engagement, and dual mission institutions – as higher education strives to meet the opportunities of a rapidly changing society.

The Associate Director, Community Management, reporting to the Assistant Vice President of Community Strategy and Engagement, is responsible for planning and coordinating the execution of ACE’s Annual Meeting and other convenings to engage and mobilize key communities for ACE. In addition, the Associate Director, Community Management plays a critical role in the Education Futures’ division’s understanding of and responding to the needs of campus leaders as they serve their students, faculty, staff and communities. 

Essential Job Duties or Tasks:

Annual Meeting and Event Management

Collaborates with key internal stakeholders to plan, promote and coordinate ACE’s Annual Meeting to ensure that the event makes manifest the mission of ACE Connect and initiates, enhances, or serves as a capstone for ongoing community engagement. 
Manages volunteer-led efforts and activities in support of organizational goals and Annual Meeting outcomes.
Coordinates ACE’s relationships with association partners to include ACAO and NAPAHE as well as institutional communities including Dual Mission Institutions, Open Research, and Working Colleges and facilitates their participation and contribution.
Executes meeting and event planning.
Reviews trends and metrics to ensure the event pipelines are healthy and implements strategies for redirection when needed.
Designs, implements, and assesses leadership programs and learning events. 
Communication and Engagement

Organizes and facilitates conversations with points of leverage, change agents and experts who can help address challenges or advance innovation within ACE Communities.  
Collaborates with Education Futures Lab and ACE’s Marketing, Communications and Public Affairs team to develop quarterly tailored messaging for ACE communities.
Explores, creates, and maintains new partnerships with community leaders to plan and coordinate key events and activities that catalyze communities and promote collaborative action.
Stays abreast of ACE initiatives (awards, events, reports, articles, proceedings) and leverages these resources, as appropriate, to support stakeholder inquiries.
Oversees ACE Connect’s efforts to identify the key issues and challenges that are affecting communities of campus leaders to inform programming (including Annual Meeting) and initiatives.  
Builds trust and maintains partnerships in support of organizational goals and cultivates effective working relationships with diverse external constituencies. 
Writes and contributes to articles for publication in educational periodicals, blogs, ACE’s website, and other relevant media.
Monitors and reports on national policy developments and cultural trends that affect community engagement strategies.
General Administration

Assists with strategic planning, long range program objectives, and policy formulation.
Recruits, trains, and leads community volunteers for ACE Connect to advance ACE’s mission and extend its reach. 
Leads highly complex projects and as the resident expert, provides training and guidance to colleagues and subordinates.
Implements business process strategies and executes day-to-day operations. Ensures results are attained and quality standards are met. Produces written reports and documented plans.
 Works as part of a cross-functional team leveraging appreciative inquiry as part of the change management, entrepreneurship, and innovation processes.
Provides mentorship to all team members.
Education/Experience/Specialized Knowledge and Competency Requirements:


Bachelor’s degree.
A minimum of eight years of professional experience related to the role. An advanced degree may substitute for some work experience.
Demonstrated knowledge and experience in meeting and event planning.
Demonstrated knowledge and experience implementing community engagement strategies such as alumni or customers.
Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain partnerships in support of organizational goals and an ability to cultivate and maintain effective working relationships with diverse external constituencies.
Demonstrated success in managing volunteer-led efforts or organizations and mobilizing volunteer efforts to achieve organizational goals.
Excellent research, writing, and oral communication skills
Entrepreneurial, innovative thinker with an ability to work as part of a cross-functional team.

Master’s degree.
Experience designing, implementing, and assessing leadership programs and learning events.
Experience with design thinking and social learning.
Working Conditions/Physical Effort:

Office environment; open floor plan; remote / telecommuting. Travel as needed.
