Johnson C. Smith University (JCSU) seeks to hire a full-time experienced, Director of Campus Police/Police.

Responsibilities: Reporting to the Sr. Vice President of Finance & Administration, the Director of Campus Police/Police Chief is responsible for the effective organization and efficient operation of both campus police and security through strategic planning, the development of systems, policies and procedures, providing mentoring for personnel, formulating and managing the departmental budget and maintaining and submitting reports and records as required by the University as well as local, state and federal agencies. The Director has administrative responsibility for all safety and security functions including, but not limited to, implementing the University’s safety and security plan. Formulates and manages the departmental budget. Supervises subordinate officers through chain of command; performs supervisory duties such as scheduling; instructing; assigning, reviewing, and planning work of others; maintaining standards; coordinating activities; selecting new employees; acting on employee problems; allocating personnel, and recommending employee disciplinary action, promotion and discharge.

Reviews the work of subordinates for completeness and accuracy; evaluates and makes recommendations as appropriate; offers advice and assistance as needed. Ensures the professional development of departmental personnel. Inspects equipment for safety and proper working condition. Ensures subordinates are properly uniformed and equipped for daily tasks. Receives and responds to student and citizen inquiries, complaints and requests for assistance. Responds to and/or provides leadership and coordination in an emergency or high-risk situations; participates in criminal, disciplinary and other investigations. Evaluates conditions in reported incidents. Reviews reports submitted by subordinate officers; completes and submits required records and reports; investigates and responds to complaints concerning subordinate personnel; attends hearings and provides court testimony as required. Operates a vehicle, firearms, restraining devices, two-way radio and other police-issued equipment as well as a variety of other equipment including a computer, printer, adding machine, copier, telephone, etc. Attends required periodic training sessions and seminars; maintains the required level of proficiency in the use of firearms; remains abreast of all federal, state and local laws, and University rules and regulations.

Requirements: A bachelor’s degree and at least ten years of progressively responsible law enforcement experience, with at least five years in a management or supervisory capacity are required. A master’s degree is preferred. The successful candidate will be a sworn law enforcement officer in the State of North Carolina who demonstrates considerable knowledge of public safety, law enforcement and security methods as well as sound management practices. Knowledge of and experience with community policing are desirable. A valid NC driver’s license, excellent oral and written communication skills, as well as the ability to work effectively with a diverse campus community, is also required.
