The Alice L. Walton School of Medicine (AWSOM) is seeking experienced, motivated, and dedicated anatomy educators to participate in the design and delivery of an innovative four-year medical school curriculum (ARCHES). Founded in 2021 by philanthropist Alice Walton, the School of Medicine will offer a four-year, medical degree (MD)-granting program that integrates conventional medicine with holistic principles and self-care practices.

The first-of-its-kind medical school will help students rise to the health challenges of the 21st century with a focus on mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual health. To achieve this, we seek individuals who will embrace innovative curricular and instructional approaches to engage medical students in active and novel learning. The School of Medicine will be a national medical school and is currently seeking programmatic and institutional accreditation. Currently in the design development phase, construction of the 154,000 square-foot medical education building will begin in spring 2023 in Bentonville, Arkansas, with the goal of completing in time to welcome the first students in fall 2025.


AWSOM seeks to reimagine medical education in America by creating a cadre of medical professionals trained in conventional medicine and whole health, an approach to health that empowers individuals to actively optimize their own mental, physical, and spiritual health and well-being in collaboration with an integrated team of health care providers. Reflecting this perspective, we seek faculty who will actively participate in cultivating an inclusive and supportive climate for all stakeholders (i.e., students, staff, faculty, patients and community members). Alice L. Walton School of Medicine is a stand-alone, sister entity to Whole Health Institute.


The Director of Information Technology will lead planning, development, and implementation of a complex technology infrastructure including hardware, software, major systems, security and networking. They will provide oversight and assistance in procuring learning technologies and applications and will be charged with development and deployment of robust systems to meet the operational demands of a high-technology medical school. The Director of IT will strategically work with partners, affiliates, and third-party vendors to manage, coordinate, and secure technology across multiple platforms, technologies, and sites. This position will require regular interface with AWSOM Leadership and will leverage relationships with a variety of partners to ensure AWSOM technical programs and infrastructures run effectively and efficiently. This position negotiates and manages agreements. This is a senior position positioned to provide leadership, vision, strategy and direction for technology, policy, software development, procurement, and the overall management of AWSOM technology needs.

Major Responsibilities/Essential Functions

· Directs the development of information technology services for AWSOM to support business operations, teaching and learning, clinical support infrastructure, and simulation.

· Oversees successful system deployment, integration, training and support for all technologies identified to support the AWSOM. This will encompass education, administration, and clinical spaces.

· Understands and manages all program issues, risks, and status and communicates to key stakeholders, AWSOM leadership, and executive sponsors.

· Oversees execution of program strategy which includes deployment of software, a robust educational learning simulation center with augmented reality capabilities, and extensive learning management tools inside the classroom, including collaboration and video technology.

· Manages the School’s IT Steering Community.

· Makes appropriate program decisions, recommendations and escalations as appropriate.

· In concert with the Vice Dean for Administration and Finance, resolves issues of competing organizational priorities.

· Directs and manages appropriate level of internal and external communications.

· Supervises a staff of approximately 6 full-time equivalents.

· Oversees analytics program to ensure proper reports and predictive analytics are in place to manage operations.

· Directs and facilitates requests for innovation-related development, including management of external vendor partnerships to bring new innovations in the field of medical school education.

· Develops a support model and establishes processes to assess future required investments and resource integration. Manages Information Technology Services budget.

· Creates the structure to manage the integrity of the School of Medicine systems and processes by reviewing existing policies/procedures and drafting new policies/procedures, where necessary, to ensure compliance with HIPAA, FERPA, PCI and other regulatory requirements.

· Conducts ongoing assessment, planning and oversight of the proper management of all academic and administrative technology required to support the AWSOM.

· Provides leadership and guidance to IT resources and vendors providing technology solutions to support the AWSOM.

· Participates in strategic and operational planning committees to ensure all Higher Learning Commission and Liaison Committee on Medical Education accreditation standards are met and implemented that support technology requirements.

· Ensures security of systems and ensures IT operations adhere to applicable laws and regulations governed by accreditation standard bodies.

· Cultivates and manages strategic relationships with both internal and external constituents. Maintains strong vendor relationships and manages contracting and service agreements.

· Develops an IT organization structure and support services to meet institutional needs and demands, including IT staffing, daily operations, development activities in support of ongoing school operations.

· Develops executive dashboards and communications to ensure transparency of program information, all gate reviews are achieved, and program is delivered on plan.

· Other duties as assigned.


Job Qualifications

Minimum Education

Postgraduate degree, such as MSc in Information Technology, Master of Information and Data Science, or equivalent.


Minimum Work Experience and Qualifications

· At least five years of experience with IT in a medical school

· Broad awareness of latest technological innovations in medical education

· Exemplary written, verbal, presentation, and interpersonal skills

· Ability to effectively mentor individuals

· Proven success as a leader

· Strong collaboration skills and ability to recognize key stakeholders and advocates of innovation and ability to establish credibility

· Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusiveness possess the ability to work with varied groups of educators and stakeholders

· Proven success as an energetic team worker

· Creativity and open-mindedness around exploring new technologies, topic areas, and opportunities for professional growth
