The Department Graduate Coordinator is responsible for coordinating the graduate students in SAS's Departments of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations and East Asian Language and Civilizations through the graduate program and all its intricate processes.

Job Description

The Department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations (EALC) is a relatively new department with a long history. Formally established in 2005 when the Department of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies divided along geographic lines, the Department dates back to the 19th century when PENN was one of the first universities to offer courses in the languages and civilizations of what was then referred to as “the Orient.” EALC is a department of interdisciplinary scholars who focus on the humanistic tradition of East Asia, covering both the classical and modern civilizations of China, Japan and Korea. We teach and research the disciplines of history, literary history, linguistics, art history, performance and gender studies, philosophy, religion and ethics. The Department offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in both Chinese and Japanese Studies and is building a parallel program for Korean Studies. Language is an important part of our program. In addition to Chinese, Japanese and Korean, offered from introductory through advanced levels, we also offer Cantonese, Taiwanese, Vietnamese and Thai on a regular basis.

The Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations (NELC) engages in the interdisciplinary humanistic study and teaching of the cultures of the Near East (often called the Middle East) as they express themselves in languages and texts, including both written and oral sources, as well as art, architecture, archaeology and material culture. These cultures encompass the geographic region that stretches from North Africa through the eastern Mediterranean, Arabia and Iran.

NELC's programs focus on the civilizations of Mesopotamia/Iraq, Egypt, Israel/Palestine, Syria, Arabia, Anatolia/Turkey and Persia/Iran. We teach Sumerian, Akkadian, Hittite, Egyptian, Hebrew, Aramaic, Arabic, Persian and Turkish, and other languages of the region, from ancient through modern.

Duties:

The Graduate Coordinator is responsible for coordinating the graduate students in SAS's Departments of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations and East Asian Language and Civilizations through the graduate program and all its intricate processes. The coordinator serves as the primary contact for graduate students, as well as providing administrative support to the Graduate Chairs of two departments. This position is also responsible for developing and maintaining communications, fielding inquiries, and guiding both students and faculty through a variety of University policies, resources, and procedures. Handles all graduate student activity coordination from application to graduation and provides guidance to students and support to faculty as related to academic and curriculum planning. Acts as departmental point person to budget and finance areas within SAS about graduate funding expenses. Working in conjunction with the departments' Business Office, arrange for the proper handling of all financial matters and procurement processes for grad students, keeping track of emerging needs, changing priorities, required resources for departmental mission. Must also understand and effectively communicate the scholarly and teaching missions of the department. In addition, processes international Visas as required for students and acts as liaison between SAS Graduate Division and the departments of NELC/EALC. The position reports to the Department Administrator of NELC/EALC.

The candidate will professionally maintain the office as a place of business ensuring supplies are put away, counters are kept clear, visitors are welcomed professionally and efficiently, assist with set up and clean up for all department events. Occasional night or weekend assignments.

Qualifications:
H.S. Diploma or GED Required, with 5-7 years of related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience. Bachelor degree strongly preferred. Ideal candidate must possess strong organizational skills, strong written and oral communications skills, and the ability to prioritize and meet deadlines. Must have a professional demeanor with the ability to provide excellent customer service to a diverse audience including working as a team and individually. Experience within a College or University setting preferred. Ideal candidate will have a solid understanding of scholarly resources across the University that are available for both students and department faculty. Financial experience, event-planning experience, and an understanding of academic and curriculum planning are preferred.

Targeted Pay Range: $20.45 - $29.00 per hour.

This Targeted Pay Range is only applicable to this job posting. All salary offers are made based on the candidate's qualifications, experience, skills, and education as they directly relate to the requirements of the position, as well as internal and market factors and grade profile.
