About the Department:The Environmental Health and Safety Center provides consultative and technical support, training and provision for regulatory compliance and effective program development and delivery to all University faculty, staff, students and visitors to campus. The Radiation Safety Section provides all services in regard to radioactive materials and x-ray producing devices.
Essential Job Duties:Radiation Safety Programs:
This position works integrally with all radiation safety requirements, including processing shipments of radioactive materials, laboratory inspections, sealed source inventory and leak testing; performing x-ray inspections of diagnostic/analytical/industrial devices; developing campus outreach and educational materials and delivering training classes; providing consultative services and other program activities associated with radiation safety.
- Participate in campus outreach activities in support of regulatory, safety, health and emergency programs.
- Maintain emergency responder training, medical surveillance and skill set necessary to act as responder.
- Active participation in emergency response procedures.
- This position has been designated as both “Essential Personnel” under Adverse Weather conditions, and “Mandatory Personnel” under Pandemic Disease conditions. This position may be required to report to work in support of emergency response to the above conditions as directed by the supervisor.
Bachelor’s degree in a Physical Science, Biological Science, Environmental Science/Engineering, Occupational Safety, Industrial Technology or related discipline; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Some positions may require additional training, certifications, or licensure. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
- Considerable knowledge and understanding of regulatory information, principles and best practices associated with scope of duties.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Must be able to assist with emergency response, carry response equipment.
- Detailed knowledge and experience with radiation producing devices and radioactive materials.
- Ability to develop and deliver training and outreach materials in support of programs.
- Ability to review program data, analyze and assist campus partners with radiation dosimetry.
- Considerable knowledge of regulations associated with radiation safety, security and compliance initiatives.
- Maintain detailed knowledge of devices and assist with inspection
- Considerable knowledge of database use and management to track regulatory activities.
- Ability to be able to both critique and clearly communicate safety concerns regarding a wide range of activities.
- Training material design and update to existing programs to meet the specific needs of the audience; knowledge of software for program development and web launch.
- Ability to clearly organize information and present it in a professional manner.
- Strong analytical abilities and communication skills necessary.
- Demonstrates understanding and application of regulatory codes/directives to implement institutional practices and develop corrective actions
- Knowledge of a broad array of radiation safety regulations, industry standards and best practices.
- Considerable communication skills for assisting others, educational pedagogy, and written correspondence
- Extensive understanding and experience with specialized testing/calibration software and compliance database management.
- Knowledge and experience with multidisciplinary problem solving and delivery of critical compliance programs
- Strong interpersonal communication skills
- Articulate and succinct written and oral communication abilities
- Participate in campus outreach activities in support of regulatory, safety, health and emergency programs.
- Maintain emergency responder training, medical surveillance and skill set necessary to act as responder.
- Active participation in emergency response procedures.
- Masters degree preferred.
- Preferred professional certifications: RT/NRRPT.
- Experience with radiation producing devices.
- RT certification preferred but not required.
- Valid Driver’s License required
