The FSU Physics Department offers research programs that are well-funded, diverse, and provide a breadth of learning and teaching experience to over 300 graduate and undergraduate students. The department is comprised of over 60 faculty members specializing in condensed matter, nuclear, high-energy, atomic, bio-, and astrophysics.

The Physics Department houses unique experimental facilities such as the John D. Fox Nuclear Accelerator Laboratory, where this position is located.

Responsibilities

In this role, you will be responsible for:

  • Responsible for supervising staff and directing business operations for the department including HR transactions, time and leave, effort reporting, purchasing, travel, grants administration, and publication materials production.
  • Responsible for approving financial transactions and personnel actions. The position supervises administrative, accounting, and grants staff, and is responsible for hiring and training in activities related to general accounting, purchasing activities including p-card, accounts payable and receivable activities, t-card and travel reimbursements, reconciliation, and revenue collection.
  • Provides supervision for the departments Grant Compliance Analyst; supervises grants staff as needed and audits grants activities and implements best practices. Coordinates with the College of Arts & Sciences to update position descriptions and review department staff structure. Assigns and prioritizes work assignments to optimize efficiency and establishes and maintains performance standards.
  • Serves as the budget manager for operating budgets and ensures appropriate expenditures of funds allocated to the department's administration. Responsible for FSU Foundation, E&G resources and revenue-generating auxiliary accounts.
  • Prepares budgets by researching historical data, reviewing financial reports, identifying academic and management needs, and anticipating funding and revenue fluctuations. Reviews proposed interdepartmental accounting procedures and policies; reviews budget control activities on all department accounts, including C&G and affiliated units/programs.
  • Creates and analyzes budget reports and provides recommendations and support to the department chair. Designs and develops accounting databases, determines accounting methods for all fiscal accounts.

What is a typical day in this position?

The Business Manager oversees the financial and administrative functions of the Department of Physics, including budget management, sponsored research, purchasing, and human resources, and works with the department Chair to coordinate long-range administrative, personnel, and fiscal goals and set internal policies and procedures.

Qualifications Minimum Requirements include:

    Bachelor's degree and two years' experience. Note: Higher education can substitute for experience at the equivalent rate.Experience managing financial and administrative functions in support of business operations.Experience with budgetary functions to include compiling financial data, forecasting, financial statements, and making recommendations.Experience reconciling internal accounting records.Experience managing multiple direct reports across administrative functions.

The Department seeks a candidate with excellent management and communication skills who is comfortable leading an administrative team with a wide array of responsibilities. Someone who is known as a problem-solver and who can work well under pressure would be a great fit in this role.

Preferred
    Experience and knowledge of the university's policies and procedures. Experience with FSU’s OMNI system, including Financials, Business Intelligence, Human Resources modules, and travel and purchasing transaction processing.

Anticipated Salary Range

Anticipated salary is $60,000 to negotiable, commensurate with qualifications and experience.
