Job Description Summary

The Advanced Practice Practitioner works independently and provides primary care, urgent care and/or mental health care, as well as health promotion to Wake Forest University (WFU) undergraduate and graduate students. In addition to patient assessment and treatment, responsibilities include performance of some laboratory tests. The Advanced Practice Practitioner works in the clinic following the academic calendar during the fall and spring semesters, including potential after-hours nurse call line coverage throughout the year (academic calendar, holidays, winter and spring breaks, inter-session breaks). Schedule could possibly include summer hours, which would be additionally compensated. Shared coverage of weekend clinics will be required each semester. This involves being responsible for monitoring an after-hours nurse call line and following up, as needed. Time off during the week would be granted when working in the weekend clinic.

*This is a fixed-term, 9 month position.

Job Description

Essential Functions:

  • Provides and manages telehealth and direct patient care including physical examinations, evaluations, assessments, diagnoses, treatments, and/or referral for students; documents in patient records ensuring completeness, accuracy, and timeliness. Provides preventative and health maintenance evaluation, care, and guidance.

  • Assures compliance with accepted standards of confidentiality of information and documents.

  • Follows established departmental policies, procedures, continuous quality improvement objectives, and safety, environmental, and/or infection control standards.

  • Obtains detailed and accurate medical histories from patients; performs appropriate physical examinations, delineates problems, and records the information in the patient’s electronic health record (EHR) to include proper usage of diagnosis and procedure coding.

  • Develops and implements patient management plans including the coordination of referrals to specialty and social services, the recording of progress notes, and the provision of continuity of care.

  • Counsels patients on medical and psychological problems and provides medical treatment where appropriate. Instructs and counsels patients regarding compliance with therapeutic regimens, sexual health planning, emotional problems of daily living, and health maintenance.

  • Provides continuity of care in the management of complex illnesses and injuries. Performs evaluation and therapeutic procedures in response to life-threatening situations.

  • Prescribes medicines according to regulatory standards and department procedures.

  • Orders laboratory tests, collects specimens, prepares for reference laboratory, performs specified tests when medical technologist is not available.

  • Facilitates communication between students, parents, administrators, other health care providers, and others in a way that both meets legal requirements and the health needs of the student.

  • Provides coverage for after-hours nurse call line on a rotating basis.

Other Functions:

  • Serves as an advocate for students.

  • Participates with other SHS staff planning, projects and programs such as health policies and procedures, health promotions, surveys, and Division of Campus Life events.

  • Serves on university committees as requested.

  • Attends scheduled staff meetings and in-service presentations.

Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • One year of relevant clinical experience required.

  • Knowledge of current principles, methods and procedures for the delivery of medical evaluation, diagnosis and treatment in primary care.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to work effectively with diverse student community. Ability to work collaboratively with the Student Health Service team.

  • Knowledge of regulatory, certification, and professional standards and methods of compliance.

  • Ability to maintain quality, safety and/or infection control standards.

  • Knowledge of health education, wellness promotion, and self-care theory and practice.

  • Demonstrated ability to perform all of the duties of an Advanced Practice Practitioner not limited to making prompt and appropriate assessments and treatments of emergency situations and making appropriate referrals to outside consultants.

  • Ability to develop and maintain effective work relationships with staff and parents/guardians.

  • Significant interest in working with college students.

  • Ability to analyze situations and take effective action.

  • Ability to collect specimens and perform specified laboratory tests.

  • Ability to prescribe medications based upon patient assessments, established guidelines, and clinical judgment.

Nurse Practitioner:

Masters of Science in Nursing with Certification as a Nurse Practitioner. Licensed as a Nurse Practitioner by the North Carolina Board of Nursing or licensure eligible. Specialty certification as a family practitioner or adult practitioner is preferred. Current CPR certification.

Physician Assistant:

Graduate of a Physician Assistant Certification program. Licensed as a Physician Assistant by the North Carolina Board of Medicine or licensure eligible. Current CPR certification.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Two to three years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

  • One year of student health experience in higher education.

  • Previous experience with sexual health issues.

  • Understanding of mental health issues in a college setting. Preference for additional mental health experience/training

Accountabilities:

  • Responsible for own work.

  • Assists with supervising and teaching 4th year medical students and/or family medicine residents
