There is unequivocal evidence that social, environmental, and behavioral factors are by far and away the strongest predictors of health and disease. Founded in 2015, the Stanford Center for Population Health Sciences' (PHS) mission is to improve individual and population health by bringing together diverse disciplines and data to better understand and address the social determinants of health.

One of PHS' strategic goals is to spur and support transdisciplinary research that advances our mission. Toward this end, we have established a large portfolio of exciting research partnerships (e.g., Aarhus University, Born in Bradford, Solano County, Google, Tata Trusts, Wadhwani AI) initiatives (e.g., recently launched PHS India Center), and working groups (e.g., air pollution and health, health disparities, mental health) that vary in terms of their scope, complexity, and topics. Working in close collaboration with PHS faculty directors and senior team, the Associate Director of Research Programs (ADR) will be responsible for developing, managing, and evaluating PHS' research programs. The ADR, playing a role that cuts across all PHS groups, is an important member of the senior team. She/he will have the opportunity to lead some of PHS' most interesting projects and initiatives with the support of a collegial and talented team. Key roles and responsibilities:
  • Manage PHS' overall portfolio of research programs
  • Lead a sub-set of research working groups, initiatives, and community impact hubs
    • Developing an overall plan that includes goals, milestones, timeline, and metrics
    • Ensuring project goals are met on schedule, anticipating and resolving potential issues
    • Assembling and managing project teams
    • Ensuring compliance with Stanford's administrative, financial, and research policies
    • Helping to secure project funding by 1) Identifying and prioritizing funding opportunities and; 2) driving/coordinating responses to funding solicitations
  • Create a vibrant research community, engaging faculty from across the university in PHS-related research
    • Developing and implementing an overall faculty outreach plan
    • Overseeing production of quarterly newsletter
    • Developing event programming that engages faculty and complements existing research programs
  • Support key NIH awards
    • Working with PHS' faculty directors, the ADR will contribute to/support key NIH awards

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Extraordinary project management skills
  • Knowledge of basic social science research principles and concepts (desired)
  • Able to exert influence without authority
  • Excellent writer (e.g., able to draft project-related reports, conference agendas, etc.)
  • Ability to quickly come up to speed on new content areas/topics, developing an understanding of the overall landscape
  • Demonstrated ability to move a project from nascent stage to maturity
  • Willingness to travel internationally on a regular basis (the PD will be expected to make frequent trips to India)
  • Comfortable with ambiguity
  • Experience successfully working in developing economy context
  • Strong interpersonal and communications skills
  • Willingness to get hands dirty when necessary to move a project forward
  • Passionate about improving the lives of underserved populations


EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):

Bachelor's degree and five years of relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):
  • Demonstrated ability to establish priorities, manage shifting priorities, and handle numerous time-sensitive projects with multiple deadlines.
  • Ability to accomplish goals working through formal and informal channels, with diplomacy and tactfulness.
  • Demonstrated creativity, problem solving, critical analysis, initiative, judgment and, decision-making skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and meet budget goals.
  • Demonstrated solid planning and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated experience working independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong relevant subject matter knowledge.
  • Ability to direct the work of others, for jobs requiring supervision.

  • Constantly perform desk-based computer tasks.
  • Frequently stand/walk, sitting, grasp lightly/fine manipulation.
  • Occasionally use a telephone.
