Job Summary/Basic Function:

The Department of Computer Science welcomes applicants for a Tenure Track Assistant or Associate Professor position beginning August, 2023.

Responsibilities include teaching, advising students, scholarly work and department and university service. Actual assignments will depend upon department needs and may include courses offered in the day, evening and/or weekend. The 7-member department is housed with modern teaching labs and dedicated faculty research labs. The Department of Computer Science, in the College of Science and Technology, has approximately 250 majors, and all majors are assigned to the full-time faculty members within the program for course advising and program mentoring. The department offers an ABET-accredited B.S. degree program in Computer Science, a multidisciplinary Data Science B.S., as well as minors in Computer Science and Data Science. Faculty will have the opportunity to teach courses offered by the Department as part of the University’s General Education Program. Classes should be conducted through multifaceted teaching strategies for face-to-face classroom delivery and/or web-enhanced or web-based formats. Faculty are expected, per the Collective Bargaining Agreement Article 4, to engage in professional responsibilities such as curriculum development and update, learning outcomes assessment for courses and programs, and participating in department, college and university meetings and workshops. There is also an expectation for faculty to mentor undergraduate students in scholarly research and to establish a robust and sustainable research agenda that leads to peer-reviewed scholarly outputs appropriate for the discipline. Faculty routinely advise and mentor students in other high-impact practices, as appropriate.

Salary and rank are commensurate with qualifications as well as aligned with the details contained in the Collective Bargaining Agreement (http://www.passhe.edu/inside/HR/LR/Pages/default.aspx) and the Millersville University Promotion Statement (http://www.millersville.edu/about/administration/policies/).

Minimum qualifications required to be considered for appointment at the rank of Associate include having an earned doctorate and a minimum of five years of full-time teaching experience (or its equivalent) and scholarship commensurate with this rank.

Required Qualifications:

  • ABD, with Ph.D. in Computer Science or Computer Engineering or Software Engineering or a closely related field completed by the date of eligibility to apply for reappointment to second year (1/30/24).
  • Significant graduate-level coursework in computer science.
  • Expertise in Computer Security or Systems.
  • Ability to teach a variety of courses in an undergraduate Computer Science program.
  • Potential for ongoing scholarly activity in a Computer Science related area that involves undergraduate students.
  • Commitment to working with students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Evidence of a commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion.
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Successful interview.
  • Successful teaching demonstration.
  • Successful completion of three background checks.
  • Successful presentation of proposed research agenda.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Earned Ph.D. in Computer Science or Computer Engineering or Software Engineering or a closely related field.
  • Demonstrated teaching experience in Computer Science or Software Engineering, as evidenced by:
    • Peer/supervisor review of teaching.
    • Student evaluations.
    • Teaching awards.
  • Demonstrated scholarly experience in a Computer Science related area that involved undergraduate students.
  • Demonstrated evidence of equitable and inclusive teaching methods and experience working with diverse populations of students.

Job Description:

TEACHING AND PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

Effectively teach students both in assigned courses and outside-the-classroom settings (e.g., student research, service learning, field activities and placements), advise students, and carry out other assigned professional responsibilities in support of student learning and success. The academic-year workload for full-time faculty is 24 workload hours (typically three 4-credit courses with 2 preparations) and faculty must hold a minimum of five office hours per week on no fewer than three different days. Primary teaching responsibility is major and/or non-major courses (lectures and laboratories) in general Computer Science as well as in their area of specialization. Establish an active research program that involves undergraduate students. Candidates must be willing to teach day, evening and/or weekend classes and conduct classes through multifaceted teaching strategies for face-to-face classroom delivery (taught at Millersville University or off-site locations such as at the Ware Center) and/or web-enhanced or web-based formats. All members of the faculty also have the responsibility to accept those reasonable duties assigned to them within their fields of competence. Faculty are expected, per Collective Bargaining Agreement Article 4, to engage in professional responsibilities such as curriculum development and update; learning outcomes assessment for courses and programs; and participating in department, college and university meetings and workshops. OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES:

Essential Functions:

  • Major responsibilities include teaching major and/or non-major courses (lectures and/or labs) in computer science as well as courses within his/her area of specialization in order to cover the faculty complement vacated by the prior faculty member.
  • Additional duties include but are not limited to developing a research program in computer science that involves undergraduates, academic advisement, as well as assessment and accreditation activities.
  • Actual assignments will depend upon department needs.
