Within Stanford's Office of the Chief Risk Officer (OCRO), team members gain a broad enterprise perspective, support a wide variety of activities, and strive to make meaningful contributions daily. This position is a member of the senior staff within OCRO and you will collaborate closely with stakeholders across the University to resolve complex and high-risk issues.

As Executive Director, Compliance Assurance and Risk Strategies, you will provide strategic leadership, management, and deep subject matter expertise to enhance Stanford's control environment and culture of compliance across all Stanford entities and lead OCRO's efforts related to supporting Stanford's response to sponsor/third-party audit activity.

The position of Executive Director, Compliance Assurance and Risk Strategies, reports to Stanford's Chief Risk Officer with a dotted line to the Chief Audit Executive.

Core Duties:
Strategic Leadership
  • Engage proactively in emerging issues discussions with stakeholders in a range of risk and compliance-related areas.
  • Collaborate on complex matters with the Chief Risk Officer, Chief Audit Executive, Chief Ethics and Compliance Officer, Chief Privacy Officer, Executive Director of Risk Management and Insurance, Enterprise Risk Management leaders, Director of Global Risk Management, and other Stanford and OCRO senior leaders.
  • Develop and implement a strategic vision for areas of focus in accordance with best practices; create strategic plans of considerable complexity and scope; set long-range direction and make high-level decisions; propose and manage the implementation of complex and significant programmatic change.
  • Build strategic partnerships across the University, SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory (SLAC), and Stanford Medicine entities to continually endeavor to enhance the control environment and culture of compliance. Negotiate with and influence university leaders on issues that have university-wide impact.

Subject Matter Expertise
  • Consult with and advise stakeholders regarding complex risk and compliance challenges, processes, and mitigation approaches.
  • Identify, research, and discuss emerging issues relevant to the risk and internal control environment.
  • Perform preliminary planning and establish direction for OCRO risk-focused projects. Lead complex, high-visibility process redesign and innovation projects; develop and implement initiatives.
  • Provide relevant subject matter expertise in support of investigations across multiple domains, including financial, research, and data privacy.
  • Service Delivery
  • Provide leadership and subject matter expertise across a range of compliance and strategic risk areas, including sponsored research and related grants and contract compliance, via: strategic initiatives; internal audits; integrated reviews; operational performance, compliance, and financial risk and control assessments; investigations; and advisory activities.
  • Champion major initiatives; provide leadership to project and initiative leaders and team members, and guide project outcomes. Oversee the management of areas of responsibility.
  • Provide deep expertise with risks, laws, and regulations related to sponsored research, clinical trials, and Department of Energy laboratories (including the Federal Acquisition Regulation and Department of Energy Acquisition Regulations), and government oversight and audits.
  • Lead OCRO's efforts related to supporting Stanford's response to sponsor/third-party audit activity (in collaboration with the Office of Research Administration and others).
  • Support institutional compliance oversight and monitoring activities.

Team Leadership
  • Direct staff and provide leadership to achieve goals and vision of the organization.
  • Provide training, strategic guidance, and direction to risk-oriented teams.
  • Guide team members to explore potential risks and issues and validate potential implications.
  • Hire, retain, coach, and mentor team members.
  • Facilitate knowledge sharing and development of subject matter expertise.
  • Foster involvement in professional organizations to shape and influence the value of OCRO services.

Communication
  • Prepare written reports and presentations, and communicate the results of risk-related projects to management and governing bodies.
  • Participate and partner with stakeholders in advisory groups and steering committees.

Minimum Education and Experience Required
  • Bachelor's degree and ten years of relevant audit, privacy, compliance, or other relevant experience in higher education, health care, research-based non-profit organizations, or government contracting, or combination of education and relevant experience.
  • CPA or CIA strongly preferred.
  • Risk-based assurance and compliance leadership experience.
  • Experience in working within universities and academic medical centers to address and resolve complex compliance matters, including sponsored research and cost accounting risks.


Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required
  • Strong strategic leadership, highly effective interpersonal, and written and oral communication skills.
  • Excellent analytical skills and ability to apply risk and risk mitigation concepts to assess current and future state processes and recommend related changes. Excellent strategic skills to craft and help implement organizational strategies and plans for campus-wide initiatives.
  • Comprehensive industry knowledge of sponsored programs administration and compliance (including federal, state, foundation and commercial funding sources), including interpreting and applying regulations, contracting terms and conditions, constituent expectations, and institutional risk tolerance considerations).
  • Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, Cost Accounting Standards, and Institute of Internal Auditors professional standards.
  • Demonstrated abilities to interact, coordinate, and collaborate across all levels (to include executives and the university's most senior staff) of the University, SLAC, and Stanford Medicine entities to establish strategic plans and objectives, influence, and negotiate, as needed. Proven presentation experience, comfort with senior management audiences, and effective facilitation skills with diverse groups.
  • Demonstrated excellent judgment and sound decision making to obtain viable solutions. Able to solve problems, trouble shoot, think creatively, and resolve conflicts.
  • Demonstrated ability to control and manage planning, staffing, budgeting, and expense priorities, and recommend and/or implement changes to methods and policies.
