Research Assistant
The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery is seeking a Research Assistant to work under the direct supervision of an orthopedic Research Professor. This role will primarily assist in the day-to-day logistical and operational tasks for various research studies in the department. The Research Assistant will interact with the investigator and collaborators in a research environment.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Oversee all research projects and activities
  • Coordinate all study team members and set priority and tasks
  • Assist and create research manuscripts including references, figures, permission forms, and conflict of interest forms
  • Calculate statistics for studies. Create methods and results for studies
  • Data management for studies in the shoulder surgery database. Collaborate with other students and fellows involved in research
  • Conduct literature reviews
  • Draft research protocols
  • Manage the IRB process for all studies. Draft IRB protocols, draft and complete continuing review paperwork, termination report paperwork, and change in research paperwork within IRB protocols.
  • IRB training and compliance monitoring for study members
  • Create abstracts for medical conferences, maintains list of deadlines, complete submissions for meting
  • Work as liaison between research projects and the Office of Research Administration. Draft research protocols, sample budgets, conflict of interests, track invoices and payments for corporate studies
  • Assist with preparation for surgeon presentations, lectures, talks
  • Assist with presentation preparation
  • Assist with fundraising efforts. Maintain list of donors, fellows, students and visitors


Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):
  • Bachelor's Degree in related discipline and some related work experience.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.*


* JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for the required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

** Applicants who do not meet the posted requirements but are completing their final academic semester/quarter will be considered eligible for employment and may be asked to provide additional information confirming their academic completion date.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Background in statistics with capability of performing some statistical analysis. Has the capability to understand statistics used in various studies.


Physical Requirements:
  • Sitting, standing and walking for extended period.
  • Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction.
  • Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s).
  • Ability to move standard equipment through a hospital or clinical environment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
