Human Resources & Inclusive Community (HRIC) at the University of Denver is led by the Vice Chancellor, Human Resources who reports directly to the Sr. Vice Chancellor, Business & Financial Affairs. HRIC is responsible for developing and delivering a broad range of services in support of the University's mission, vision, and strategies. HRIC has evolved from a traditional operational and service orientation into a highly effective strategic unit advancing the broader strategic aims of the University. The Director, Classification and Compensation will be an innovative, collaborative leader that will advance the University's objectives and embraces its unique and extraordinary culture. The compensation strategy will support the University's aim to attract, reward and retain world-class faculty and staff talent with its compensation plan design. This role serves as part of the University's Human Resources leadership team, reporting to the Vice Chancellor of Human Resources.

Position Summary

The Director, Classification and Compensation is responsible for the strategic planning, evaluation, communication, implementation, and administration of classification and compensation programs at the University of Denver. This position will be responsible for developing a compensation philosophy for the University and managing all classification, compensation, salary and pay programs across 1,700 benefited staff employees as well as understanding the impact in these areas for our approximately 5,000 non-benefited employees. This position is also responsible for advising University leadership on a balanced compensation strategy that supports the strategic direction of the University while considering the varying employee groups within the University. The position must partner strategically with other leaders across campus and within HRIC to ensure that the delivery of a classification and compensation program is synergistic with HR's priority of enabling the institution, employee effectiveness, and other workforce strategies.

Essential Functions

  • Overall accountable and responsible for the strategic development and implementation of compensation and executive compensation for the institution.
  • Develops and implements all compensation programs.
  • Evaluates the effectiveness of existing policies, guidelines, job architecture and classification, and procedures.
  • Recommends plan revisions as well as new plans which are cost effective and consistent with market trends, best practices, and institutional objectives.
  • Lead through influence necessary changes in organization and culture to achieve an effective compensation strategy.
  • Lead the design, development and implementation of job architecture and classification plans, policies and procedures.
  • Lead and conducts reclassification studies, desk audits, salary surveys and trends analyses.
  • Help set the strategic direction of compensation programming.
  • Facilitate training sessions regarding classification, position descriptions and other classification and compensation initiatives.
  • Manage vendor relationships as they relate to our compensation planning.
  • Manage the communication and marketing of all aspects of compensation with the assistance of the Marketing and Communications Division.
  • Prepares and delivers informational and persuasive presentations regarding classification and compensation programming.
  • Design, develop, communicate, and maintain all processes and policies for classification and compensation programs to ensure effective utilization and regulatory compliance.
  • Provides expertise and guidance to other members of HRIC. Advises HR and leadership on job classification and pay decisions, policy and guideline interpretations and provides creative solutions to complex problems.
  • Provides direction, guidance, and assistance to one full time, and two part time Compensation Analysts.
  • Incorporate inclusive excellence and equity in all aspects of classification and compensation programming.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Advanced knowledge of executive compensation, incentive pay, Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics job codes, FLSA exemption status and similar regulations, job evaluation/classification concepts, salary survey techniques, merit pay processes, performance evaluation methods and applicable regulations.
  • Knowledge of the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act and Colorado Overtime & Minimum Pay Standards #38
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including presentation skills.
  • Effective interpersonal skills and leadership abilities.
  • Effective analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Project management skills with the ability to prioritize and handle multiple issues and projects concurrently.
  • Ability to embrace the core values of the institution and balance the constrained compensation environment with successful programs.
  • Knowledge of all compliance matters - regulatory/legislative as they relate to compensation.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in business, accounting, finance, human resources management or related field.
  • Relevant experience may substitute for the degree requirement.
  • Five (5) years in a leadership role with strong track record of driving successful results specifically in compensation design and administration.
  • Prior management and supervisory experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in business, accounting, finance, human resources management or related field.

Working Environment

1. Standard office environment.
2. Unexpected interruptions occur often and stress level is moderate to high.
3. Noise level is quiet to moderate.

Physical Activities

1. Ability to sit in front of a computer for an extended period of time.
2. Occasionally required to move about the office/campus with the capability of transporting objects up to 20 lbs.

Work Schedule
Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Evenings and weekends as required.

Salary Grade Number:
The salary grade for the position is 16.

Salary Range:
The salary range for this position is $140,000 - $150,000.

The University of Denver has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The University may ultimately pay more or less than the posted compensation range. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, but not based on a candidates sex or any other protected status.
