Nature of Work

CellSight, the Ocular Stem Cell and Regeneration Program at the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Colorado, Anschutz Medical Campus, seeks full-time (1.O FTE) Postdoctoral Fellows to carry out research in the areas of retinal biology, stem cell technologies, and regenerative medicine. CellSight is expanding and we are recruiting a team of Postdoctoral Fellows with an array of qualifications to compliment our programmatic growth. CellSight is a cross-disciplinary team of investigators working in a highly collaborative environment with the common goal of developing novel stem cell-based therapeutics to treat ocular diseases. The successful postdoctoral fellows will lead specific research projects aimed at: (1) developing innovative models of retinal degenerative diseases, (2) understanding the molecular mechanisms associated with disease, and (3) evaluating novel potential therapeutic strategies. This is an exciting, new line of work using cutting-edge technology in the stem cell field and we are looking for motivated and independent scientists willing to contribute their expertise and knowledge. There is no direct patient care or contact involved in this position. Main responsibilities include developing and carrying out research projects using stem cell culture and retinal organoid tissues along with cell, developmental and molecular biology techniques. Duties include publishing and communicating research results in both oral and written formats and assisting with the training and mentoring of students and technicians.

We are recruiting a team of several Postdoctoral Fellows with an array of qualifications to compliment CellSight programmatic growth. The Postdoctoral Fellows will report to CellSight principal investigators Joseph Brzezinski, Ph.D., Natalia Vergara, PhD, or Valeria Canto-Soler, Ph.D, based on the lab/project each postdoctoral fellow joins. They will receive direction and training in carrying out duties and responsibilities by the principal investigator.

Examples of Work Performed

The responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Designing and planning research studies
  • Performing experiments using human induced pluripotent stem cell (hiPSC) cultures, retinal organoid tissues, and other molecular, developmental and cell biology techniques as needed
  • Analyzing and interpreting research results.
  • Maintaining effective communication with the investigator and other team members
  • Keeping an organized record of research experiments and results
  • Assisting in the training and mentoring of students and technicians
  • Preparing manuscripts for publication in scientific journals
  • Participating in lab meetings and attending scientific seminars and conferences

Salary and Benefits:

The hiring rate (or budgeted rate) for this position has been established at $53,760.

The above salary rate represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the rate at the time of posting.

Qualifications
Minimum Required Qualifications
  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a MD/PhD or PhD in a relevant biomedical science discipline

Preferred Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will have all or most of the following credentials:
  • Previous experience in vision science research
  • Experience with stem cell culture techniques, 3D organoid differentiation
  • Experience with cell, developmental, and molecular biology techniques
  • Understanding the pathophysiology of retinal degenerative diseases
  • Training in the use of animal models of visual impairment
  • Training in ocular surgical procedures and follow up post-operative assesment
  • A strong publishing record
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Proven ability to work independently and effectively with others as part of a team
