Student Life and Campus Community has an opening for a full-time University Staff (unclassified) Assistant Director for Student Engagement position.

Nature of Work:
The position reports to the Director of Student Life and Campus Community with responsibilities in internal and external student engagement. Primary responsibilities include supporting all functions of the CU Denver's Student Government Association (internal student engagement) which include advising, student staff supervision, leadership development, event/program management and business functions and fiscal management. The AD for Student Engagement coordinates civic and voter education programming (external engagement), supports leadership development and supervises the Coordinator for Leadership Education & Community Engagement. This position collaborates with all Student Life units and supports departmental services and events as assigned.

  • Approximately 30 student leaders/employees
  • Coordinator for Leadership Education & Community Engagement

Examples of Work Performed:

Student Government Association Advising: (65%)
  • Serve as the daily advisor of the Student Government Association. This includes the supervising and leadership coaching of the SGA President, Vice President of Senate, Vice President of Graduate Affairs, Chief of staff, Chief Justice, 12 Senators, 7 College Council Representatives, 2 SACAB Representatives, the Director of the Student Fee Review Committee, multiple committees, and their leadership chairs.
  • Provide training and oversight of the Finance & Funding Committee (distributes approximately $70,000 a year to student organizations) and supports SGA Director of Events (planning and purchasing for major campus events).
  • Assist students with planning events and attends student initiatives (some weekends and evening may be required).
  • Work in conjunction with the Director of Student Life and Campus Community to advise the SGA President and Vice President.
  • Prepare and support students for interacting with high level administrators.
  • Provide support to SGA initiatives and student officers.
  • Provide oversight and management of recruitment, hiring, offer letters, and on-boarding of up to 30 student staff.
  • Support the SGA office via marketing, social media, communication, assessment, and program/event management.
  • Manage all operations of SGA including supervising front desk operations, referring to other areas of campus as necessary, scheduling appointments for members, and fielding a variety of questions/concerns;
  • Support the SGA in financial duties (payroll, purchasing, reconciling budgets with students, etc.), event coordination and purchasing as well as office assessment facilitation.

Student Life Support and Community Engagement: (35%)
  • Coordinate campus wide civic / voter education programming and serve as the CU Denver representative on the tri-institutional voter educate committee with partners from the Community College of Denver and Metropolitan State University of Denver.
  • Provide vision and oversite of Leadership Education and the Community Service / Volunteerism program. This includes supervising a professional staff person who will manage the day-to-day program.
  • Support Student Life programming and various campus partnerships and committees (Peer Advocate Leader (PAL) program, International Programs, Wellness Center, Orientation, Learning Resource Center, etc.). These tasks require collaboration, planning, and execution and assessment skills.
  • Participate in the leadership development of students through leading trainings, workshops, and experiences.
  • Program within the Student Experience Curriculum.
  • Support the leadership development of student organizations and their members.
  • Collaborate with peers to program for the campus.

Salary and Benefits:
The hiring range for this position has been established at $63,287.

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

This position is not eligible for overtime compensation.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
  • 2 years of experience working in an institution of higher education in student activities, campus life or related area.
  • Experience working with college students and volunteers and/or event planning.
  • 1 or more years of experience working with student organizations, youth governmental bodies, large groups of volunteers, and stakeholders.
  • 2 years of experience training and supervising student employees.

Required: Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

Condition of Employment:
Some evening and weekend hours may be required.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • A master's degree in student affairs, higher education, counselor education, non-profit management, communications, or related field of study, or a directly related field from an accredited institution.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years full time work experience at an institution of higher education in student activities, campus life or related area.
  • Experience advising a large scale (college level) student organization such as Student Government Association or Residence Hall Association.
  • Experience working with community engagement experience and / or work with non-profit organizations and volunteerism programs.
  • Experience collaborating and supporting a diverse student population and/or first-generation students.

  • Experience with advising large and / or complex college student organizations
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and orally.
  • Resourcefulness and ability to problem-solve and take initiative; ability to anticipate needs and priorities. Flexible and collaborative, yet able to work effectively with a high degree of independence
  • Ability to function in a fast-paced, student-centered, and developmentally focused higher education environment
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees at all levels throughout the institution.
