Digital Strategy and Learning has an opening for a full-time University Staff (unclassified) Instructional Designer (Open-Rank) position.

Jobs in this career family provide general business operations of the organization or a combination of operational responsibilities covering multiple career families. Functions include institutional research, statistical analysis, policy development and review, strategic planning and broad unit business operations such as parking and transportation services, risk management, childcare services, real estate and property management, retail services or job responsibilities that combine fiscal, HR and operational management responsibilities.

Intermediate Level: Professionals at the intermediate level are responsible for exercising discretion, analytical skill, personal accountability and responsibility in a wide range of areas including academic, administrative, managerial and student services functions. Work involves creating, integrating, applying and sharing knowledge directly related to a professional field. At the intermediate level, duties may be more limited in scope and are performed with guidance and direction from other professionals.

Senior Level: Senior Professionals are responsible for exercising discretion, analytical skill, personal accountability and responsibility in a wide range of areas including academic, administrative, managerial and student services functions. Work involves creating, integrating, applying and sharing knowledge directly related to a professional field. Work is performed fully independently.

Position Emphasis:
A central goal of the University of Colorado Denver's strategic plan is to become the "university for life," providing access to educational excellence over a lifetime. Citing the fact that people are living longer and switching careers more often, the plan sets the objectives to provide lifelong learning opportunities for students of all ages. CU Denver currently provides credit, noncredit, certificate, continuing and professional education offerings, through its schools and colleges, for individuals looking to expand their skills or transition into a new area.

This Instructional Designer role strategically partners with university faculty and key stakeholders to design online, hybrid, and flexible modality courses, leading through their unique expertise in instructional design, collaborative consultation, and digital pedagogy. As part of the Program Development team, the Instructional Designer will contribute to the strategic growth of digital education at CU Denver.

Supervision Received: This position reports to the Assistant Director of Instructional Design. The Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning, Information Technology, and faculty and staff throughout the schools and colleges working on program development will also be critical partners.

Key Responsibilities:

Course and Curriculum Planning, Design & Development – 45%:
  • In collaboration with the Assistant Director of Instructional Design, engage in small and large-scale instructional projects engaging design thinking and project management principles and approaches with faculty across the university.
  • Engage in continuous improvement and refinement initiatives for projects, processes, and practices related to instructional design.
  • Serve as an instructional designer for academic programs and courses, partnering with faculty and academic partners.
  • Utilize project charters, plans, milestones, schedules, and timelines using standard project management and agile methodologies to ensure course and curriculum design projects are completed on time.
  • Clearly articulate course and curriculum designs and deliverables through all phases of the program development lifecycle.

Senior Appointment:
  • Implement best practices for instructional design and curriculum development, fostering a culture of just-in-time, high-quality learning.
  • Provide expert instructional design consultation to departments or schools for academic program designs, redesigns, and curricular evaluation.
  • Develop and implement relevant quality norms and inclusive practices across all new and revised courses.
  • Establish feedback loops related to course quality, student engagement and success for continuous improvement.

Partnerships and Collaboration – 45%:
  • Develop and maintain strong working relationships with faculty partners and instructional staff across campus.
  • Design academic courses and programs through a partnership-focused model of instructional design.
  • In collaboration with the Director of Academic Technology and Training, design and facilitate relevant instructional design trainings and workshops.
  • Manage timelines and development schedules for multiple concurrent course designs, ensuring that courses are designed on time at the highest level of quality.
  • Coach faculty in the implementation of the designs you develop in partnership.
  • Support and advance the culture of the Program Development team, fostering collaboration, trust, innovation, and authenticity both with the team and with collaborators.

Senior Appointment:
  • Serve as an informal ambassador between the Program Development unit and campus faculty in individual schools and colleges.
  • Advocate for student-centered teaching and design practices with a diverse range of faculty, instructional staff, and administrators.
  • Work one-on-one with faculty in the conceptual design of academic courses, including outcomes development, activity design, and cultivating intentional learning experiences.

University Responsibility and Professional Development – 10%:
  • Represent CU Denver at local, regional and national meetings and events and make presentations to stakeholders.
  • Identify and participate in research related to instructional design and online learning, advancing knowledge and practice within the broader discipline of higher education instructional design.
  • Serve fully on unit or university teams, committees, task forces, etc. as requested.
  • Complete other duties as assigned.

Senior Appointment:
  • Explore trends, research, and new learning technologies from a design-centric perspective.

Candidates will be responsible for travel expenses related to the interview process and any relocation expenses, if applicable.

Salary and Benefits:
The hiring range for this position has been established at $57,691 to $77,306.

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

This position is not eligible for overtime compensation.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:

Intermediate Appointment:
  • Bachelor's degree in education, educational technology, instructional design, academic technology, or related field of study.
  • One (1) year of experience in a teaching or instructional design-focused role and context.

Required: Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

Senior Appointment:
  • Bachelor's degree in education, educational technology, instructional design, academic technology, or related field of study.
  • Two (2) years of experience in a teaching or instructional design-focused role and context.
  • Experience working with basic workplace and academic technologies, such as Slack, G Suite, an LMS (such as Canvas), and media development tools.
  • Additional professional development in instructional design and/or academic technologies including industry certifications or credentials.

Required: Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

Conditions of Employment:
  • This position is eligible for fully-remote work. The work schedule will be based around core working hours in Colorado Mountain Time.

Preferred Qualifications (All Levels):
  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a master's degree in education, educational technology, instructional design, academic technology, or related field of study.
  • 1-2 years of experience as an instructional designer in higher education.
  • 1-2 years of experience in the design and delivery of professional development for educators and diverse audiences.
  • Experience collaborating with university faculty on instructional design projects and initiatives, such as course design and technology implementation.
  • Experience in consultative approaches to learning design with strong relationship management skills.
  • Experience with project planning and creative problem-solving.

Competencies, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (All Levels):
  • Demonstrated excellence in written and oral communication skills.
  • Collegial team member with outstanding relationship skills and a collaborative perspective.
  • Familiarity with common models and processes of instructional design, theories of online learning, and student-centered pedagogy.
  • Experienced teacher in the areas of online instructional design and the purposeful integration of learning technologies into online teaching practice.
  • Strong project management skills, including the ability to focus on priorities, manage concurrent design projects, and set achievable timelines.
  • Active pursuit of knowledge related to trends, issues, and advancements in the field of instructional design for higher education.
  • Familiarity with common academic technologies such as Zoom (web conferencing), Canvas (learning management system), and Camtasia (media development).
