The Dean's Office, Community Practice Division has an opening for a full-time University Staff (unclassified) Athletic Certified Trainer (ATC) position.

Position Summary:

The Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC) provides high quality support to physicians and advanced practice providers (APPs) in meeting the operational needs of the practice and the medical needs of the patient. The ATC assesses and evaluates patient conditions, and then plans, implements, provides, monitors, evaluates, and documents patient care in a manner according to ATC scope and standards.

Position Responsibilities & Essential Duties:
  • Escorts patients to and from exam rooms and readies them for physicians; takes vital signs, records medical history/symptoms, patient progress, physical exam, and any special tests. Presents information to the physician and ensures documentation is available and complete.
  • Reconciles all patient medications and updates allergies in the medical record.
  • Handles patient calls by recording patient questions, refill requests, and other communications and provides messages to the physicians. At the direction of the physician, performs patient education, calling in pharmacy refills, assisting with appointments, or arranging for follow-up tests or admissions.
  • Enters patient radiographs per physician standing orders.
  • As instructed by the physician, completes appropriate forms and referral. Enters patient orders and referrals per physician standing order and scheduling such follow-up appointments.
  • Monitors patient flow to ensure efficient room usage and optimal patient care.
  • Assists patients to x-ray, scheduling desk, waiting room, or to transportation as needed.
  • Obtains all special study reports and physical therapy progress reports prior to physician visit; as needed, scan reports into Epic.
  • Provides patient care during the initial post-operative period to include dressing changes, wound care, suture removal, and patient education. Records and documents all such activities in the chart.
  • As instructed by the physician, prepares the patient for in-office procedures, such as injections and electromyography.
  • Assists physician with procedures as necessary.
  • As prescribed by the physician, the ATC selects, fabricates, and/or customizes prophylactic, assistive, and restrictive devices, such as casting, bracing and splinting materials. Delivers appropriate teaching on crutch, cane and walker use.
  • Assists in the provision of patient equipment and materials by obtaining insurance authorizations for products and supplies provided; directs patients to proper facilities to obtain the prescribed products and as dictated by their insurance; facilitates patient pick-up of durable medical equipment (DME) at satellite clinics or other locations.
  • Cleans and maintains exam rooms per policy and keep rooms adequately stocked with supplies.
  • As directed by the physician, provides patient education in the following areas: Educates pre-operative patients in the areas of surgical procedures and signs and symptoms to monitor during the post-surgical phase.
  • Provides and instructs patients on physician-approved home exercise programs. Performs gait analysis and gait training.
  • Administers minor treatments as prescribed; records and documents all such activities in the chart.
  • Performs ATC Visits; records, documents and performs charge entry activities in the chart.
  • Cleans and stocks all patient examination rooms; cleans and prepares instruments for procedures; keeps list of needed medical supplies.
  • Completes paperwork such as ordering lab tests, x-rays, school/work notes, etc.
  • Clean and sterilize equipment; check and restock medication cabinet as necessary.
  • Respond to patient questions and concerns as liaison between physician and patient.
  • Reports all test results to the patient as directed by the physician.
  • Performs OSHA controls as required.
  • Provides education and technical demonstrations to students, nursing staff, residents and other healthcare professionals. Assists in orienting and mentoring staff. This includes patient care procedures, and application of bracing, splinting and casting.
  • Performs other projects and duties as related to department objectives.
  • Must be able to get along with others, be a team player, accept constructive criticism from supervisors and be able to follow work rules.
  • Utilizes current practices to provide patient care while focusing on the needs of the patient and exemplifying service excellence, care, concern, respect and cooperation.
  • Demonstrates responsibility and accountability for professional practice and for continued education, professional growth, and self-evaluation.
  • Performs appropriate basic and/or routine regular delegated medical functions as directed and within appropriate scope of practice as inferred by knowledge, skill level, and CU clinic guidelines.

  • Ensures compliance with all infection control standards.
  • Participates in CU Quality Improvement (QI) initiatives and metrics.

  • Ensures that the service expectations of both internal and external customers are met and/or exceeded.
  • Must be able to travel to alternate locations as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
    Bachelor's degree in kinesiology, health care, or a related field. Licensure /Certifications: Certification by The Board of Certification for the Athletic Trainer Licensure with the State of Colorado as an Athletic Trainer

Condition of Employment:
    Current Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross healthcare provider level CPR certification

Substitution: A combination of related education and experience may be considered.

Salary and Benefits:

The hiring range (or budgeted range) for this position begins at $51,378 per year.

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

The above salary rate represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the rate at the time of posting.

This position is eligible for overtime compensation.
