Nature of Work

In collaboration with CU School of Medicine Office of Medical Education (OME) leadership and under the direction of the Director of Health and Society, the 0.20 FTE Director for Community Engagement, CSB is responsible for co-developing and managing service-learning curricula and community engagement experiences. This includes developing service-learning curricula, fostering community partnerships, supporting student community engagement activities and related student academic scholarship.

Supervision Received

This position reports directly to the Director, Health and Society.

The scope and focus of the contributions of the Director of Community Engagement, CSB to the School of Medicine's (SOM) educational mission will be in the following key areas:

Oversight
  • Develop and implement curricular content relevant to the service-learning curriculum
  • Oversee and participate in the recruitment, development, and evaluation of community organizations/partners in collaboration with the Director, Service-Learning Curriculum, the Director, Health and Society, and the Colorado Springs Longitudinal Integrated Clerkship team.
  • Foster relationships between students and community organizations; problem-solve challenges related to the community engagement experience.
  • Lead by example, demonstrating integrity, civility, professionalism, and commitment to organizational values.

Examples of Work Performed

Academic Administration and Leadership:
  • Collaborate and engage with social services and other community organizations in Colorado Springs and surrounding areas to develop longitudinal service-learning community engagement experiences for students.
  • Collaborate with and evolve existing Colorado Springs service-learning initiatives (separate and complementary to the service-learning community engagement experience) including the CU SOM-Springs Rescue Mission Foot Clinic, Mission Medical Clinic, and the IDD Family Collaborative
  • Participate in the CU SOM Community Engagement and Curriculum Advisory Board (CECAB); recruit and steward local members to the CECAB.
  • Support community organizations and students in community engagement activities as needed, including mentorship around needs assessment, project evaluation, and scholarship
  • Collaborate with the Director, Service-Learning Curriculum, the UCCS Development office, and community partners to solicit monetary donations for student community engagement project funds.

Curriculum Design and Implementation:
  • Work with the Director, Health and Society and the Director, Service-Learning Curriculum to adopt, implement, and evaluate the student service-learning curriculum and community engagement experiences in Colorado Springs and surrounding areas.
  • Work with the Director, Service-Learning Curriculum and OME Director of Electives to develop, implement, evaluate, and continuously improve electives that involve community-based serving learning in Colorado Springs and surrounding areas.
  • Collaborate with the Colorado Springs Branch LIC team to integrate community engagement and Health and Society curricular content into the LIC in support of relevant learning objectives and curricular goals.
  • Connect with existing community partners, foster relationships with new community organizations, and promote student-community connections in support of student community engagement experiences.

Salary and Benefits:

The salary range (or hiring range) has been established at $10,000 to 40,000 (salary support) All ranks.

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

Minimum Qualifications:

Clinical Assistant Professor:
  • Eligible to be a faculty member, University of Colorado School of Medicine
  • Master's degree or higher in a field related to curriculum development/education, community engagement, or the health professions
  • At least 2-3 years of experience working with community organizations to advance education, research, and/or clinical care of community members.
  • Sustained record of success and demonstrated leadership
  • Exemplary teaching and mentorship record

Clinical Associate Professor:
  • Eligible to be a faculty member, University of Colorado School of Medicine
  • Master's degree or higher in a field related to curriculum development/education, community engagement, or the health professions
  • At least 2-3 years of experience working with community organizations to advance education, research, and/or clinical care of community members.
  • Sustained record of success and demonstrated leadership
  • Exemplary teaching and mentorship record

Clinical Professor:
  • Eligible to be a faculty member, University of Colorado School of Medicine
  • Master's degree or higher in a field related to curriculum development/education, community engagement, or the health professions
  • At least 2-3 years of experience working with community organizations to advance education, research, and/or clinical care of community members.
  • Sustained record of success and demonstrated leadership
  • Exemplary teaching and mentorship record

Clinical Instructor:
  • Eligible to be a faculty member, University of Colorado School of Medicine
  • Master's degree or higher in a field related to curriculum development/education, community engagement, or the health professions
  • At least 2-3 years of experience working with community organizations to advance education, research, and/or clinical care of community members.
  • Sustained record of success and demonstrated leadership
  • Exemplary teaching and mentorship record

Clinical Sr Instructor:
  • Eligible to be a faculty member, University of Colorado School of Medicine
  • Master's degree or higher in a field related to curriculum development/education, community engagement, or the health professions
  • At least 2-3 years of experience working with community organizations to advance education, research, and/or clinical care of community members.
  • Sustained record of success and demonstrated leadership
  • Exemplary teaching and mentorship record
  • Experience working with community

Preferred Qualifications (same for all ranks: Clinical Assistant Professor, Clinical Associate Professor, Clinical Professor, Clinical Instructor, Clinical Sr Instructor)
  • Advanced or terminal degree in a health professions field
  • Experience working with and leading a diverse team
  • Experience working with community
  • Demonstrated ability to develop individuals committed to inclusion
  • Role models respect for differences in ideas, perspectives, unique characteristics, and strengths
  • At least 2-3 years of curriculum development experience at a major university, professional school, or healthcare organization
  • Knowledge and understanding of the Colorado Springs community or surrounding areas



Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Must be knowledgeable about medical education and have experience in medical education, curriculum development, and scholarship.
  • Must be knowledgeable about the School of Medicine including undergraduate medical education curriculum and student requirements.
  • Must have superior interpersonal and communication skills that support consensus building, a safe environment, and shared decision making. Facility in building collaborative and productive working relationships within the medical education milieu.
  • The candidate must demonstrate excellent communication skills, innovative thinking, cultural humility, and a commitment to health equity.
