The Continuous Improvement team, which is part of the Budget, Planning and Analysis Office, has an opening for a full-time University Staff (unclassified) Strategic Data Analyst position.

Jobs in this career family provide general business operations of the organization or a combination of operational responsibilities covering multiple career families. Functions include institutional research, statistical analysis, data integrity, reports, dashboards, strategic planning and broad unit business operations analysis for central unit areas such as human resources, information technology, facilities, and many others, or job responsibilities that combine fiscal, HR and operational management responsibilities.

Professionals at the intermediate level are responsible for exercising discretion, analytical skill, personal accountability and responsibility in a wide range of areas including academic, administrative, managerial and student services functions. At the intermediate level, duties may be more limited in scope and are performed with guidance and direction from other professionals.

Job Summary:

The Strategic Data Analyst position represents an exciting opportunity to provide business intelligence analytics, consulting, and support to the Continuous Improvement team, Budget, Planning and Analysis Department, and additional ad hoc requests from the Executive Vice Chancellor's Office. The position will focus on integrating data from a variety of systems (PeopleSoft HCM, Tableau, Excel files, Salesforce, school and unit performance management systems, etc.) to create cross-cutting insights and data visualization at the campus level. These insights will inform planning, policy decisions, and operational improvements. This position will also respond to recurring and ad hoc requests for information about projects overseen by the offices mentioned above.

To be successful in this role, the incumbent will be able to: rapidly develop a deep understanding of the structures and data available in campus systems; build key relationships with campus partners in order to identify additional strategic data that may be available in school/college systems; and assist those partners in assessing needs, mechanisms, and procedures around effective data collection and management.

Examples of Work Performed:
  • Respond to requests for information and analysis by organizing, combining, analyzing, and interpreting data resulting from the operational activities of the areas mentioned above. This work may include identifying new or enhanced data sources as needed.
  • Create data visualizations using software such as Tableau. These data visualizations will be used for strategic planning, implementation of initiatives, and discussion with senior campus leaders.
  • Present data that includes quantitative and qualitative information about the organization's key mission areas and assist senior leadership in interpreting and using the data to influence changes to operations, processes, and/or programs.
  • Aggregate data from a variety of systems where standardized policies or procedures may or may not exist and make recommendations for best practices in policies and procedures for data collection and maintenance.
  • Liaise with other campus units, working collaboratively with campus teams to develop sustainable systems, mechanisms, and procedures for tracking institutional data toward strategic goals.
  • Consult on strategic decisions to best utilize or adapt current systems when embarking on change management efforts.
  • Prepare spreadsheets, reports, summaries, charts, slides, and other visual aids to describe findings, propose solutions, and predict trends. • Assist with troubleshooting, analyzing, resolving, monitoring, and documenting complex user inquiries, as needed.
  • Participate in new and established cross-functional data initiatives to support process improvements, programs, policy reviews, and data integrity.

Salary and Benefits:

The salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established at $44,526 - $62,337
  • The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.
  • The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

This position is not eligible for overtime compensation.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree and/or equivalent experience in a relevant subject area, such as Computer Science, Information Technology, Business Administration, Mathematics, Statistics, Library Science, or Data Science.
  • At least one (1) year of relevant experience designing and developing reports in a complex environment with multiple data sets and data bases and varying quality of data.
  • Experience with systems, processes, and procedures linked to business intelligence and strategy Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's degree and/or equivalent experience in a relevant subject area, such as Computer Science, Information Technology, Business Administration, Mathematics, Statistics, Library Science, or Data Science.
  • At least three (3) years of relevant experience designing and developing reports in a complex environment with multiple data sets and data bases and varying quality of data.
  • Experience with customer relationship management systems (CRMs) and/or human relationship management systems (HRMs)
  • Experience working with SQL or SAS or SPSS or Python or data management or data warehousing tools
  • Experience with Tableau or other data visualization tools

Competencies:
  • Familiarity with best practices for data integrity, analysis, visualization, and security.
  • Ability to use MS Excel (or other similar tools) to present, summarize and manipulate data (including tables, charts, and graphs)
  • Advanced analytical and research skills, as demonstrated by the ability to develop, assess, and blend information from a wide variety of data sources.
  • Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team in a collaborative environment, build consensus and promote the exchange of information.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with individuals of diverse backgrounds and technical skills.
  • Creative problem-solver with a passion for identifying needs and proposing solutions.
  • Ability to manage workload autonomously, work with many constituents, juggle multiple competing tasks, and set priorities to achieve results.
  • Ability to work under tight/changing deadlines.
  • Ability to learn new software and systems quickly and independently.
