General Summary

A Business Analyst is the liaison between University business partners and technology staff in Technology Solutions. Through their work, they ensure projects meet established objectives to benefit functional users. This position is primarily responsible for:

  • Creating business cases
  • Facilitating meetings
  • Discovering, understanding, and documenting and/or improving processes
  • Gathering and documenting requirements, business rules, and use cases
  • Negotiating requirements on behalf of the business and IT
  • Assisting with testing changes to ensure they meet requirements

Exceptional communication and inquiry skills are critical to the success of this position. In particular, business analysts play a central role in aligning the needs of business units with the capabilities delivered by information technology and will serve as a "translator" between those groups. They handle multiple projects simultaneously, therefore, time management and organizational skills must be excellent in order to ensure quality work is consistently delivered.

Required Qualifications
  1. Bachelor's or equivalent degree in business administration, management, or a field related to the position
  2. Two years of experience working as a Business Analyst on IT projects or related position in an IT environment
  3. Experience communicating through interpersonal, written and presentation methods
  4. Experience with or awareness of business transformation and business process redesign to support IT system modernization
  5. Experience with or awareness in creating models and using multiple analysis methodologies to help inform changes, requirements, and recommendations
  6. Ability to create deliverables such as requirements documents, business process maps, use cases, and executive summaries through utilizing standardized templates, following specific processes, and applying best practices
  7. Ability to analyze and synthesize large amounts of detailed information, quickly understand complex issues, and break information down into smaller, more manageable pieces
  8. Possess excellent documentation skills, including editing and proofreading skills
  9. Ability to multitask and manage multiple deadlines and tasks that may be very different in nature to ensure on time work completion
  10. Ability to work independently and in a team environment with excellent communication and collaboration skills
  11. Possess strong customer service skills along with a desire for achieving excellence in customer satisfaction, process and product quality, and reliability.
  12. Possess and demonstrate analytical and critical thinking skills to assess situations, troubleshoot, and make recommendations from both strategic and tactical perspectives
Desired Qualifications
  1. Master's degree in Business, Information Systems, Technology, Communications, or a related field
  2. LEAN certified
  3. Six Sigma certified
  4. IIBA or PMI certification
  5. Demonstrated experience in software testing
  6. Agile BA experience
  7. Experience with higher education administrative systems
Work Hours

Core Hours: 8:00am-4:30pm Monday through Friday; occasional weekend and evening hours as business needs dictate

The Civil Service examination for this classification is based on your application materials. No participation other than submission of applicant materials is required from applicants that qualify to take the exam. If you meet the minimum required qualifications for this position, you will receive a score calculated based on your education and experience, and your name will be placed on the active employment register by exam score.
