Posting Description

The Department of Pathology seeks a full-time PhD and/or MD at the rank of Professor, with an established, independent externally funded research program and strong people skills to lead our research efforts in Experimental Pathology. Eligible candidates must have a track record of productivity and external funding (preferably from government agencies) and a scientific focus directly or indirectly related to cancer. Leadership responsibilities will take no more than ~30% of the full time effort, leaving ~70% of the faculty effort for research and teaching. This position requires oversight and the facilitation of the careers and research of ~20 faculty; thus, strong organizational and communication skills as well as efficacy in mentoring others will be critical to success.

They will promote basic to translational research and represent research faculty on issues related to graduate and post-graduate education, promotion and tenure, salary, space, equipment, program development, faculty recruitment and funding. Candidates with an MD degree who have board certification in Pathology, and who want to practice adult or pediatric pathology, or molecular diagnostic pathology/cytogenetics as a small component of their time allocation (no more than one third) are also encouraged to apply. Applicants with expertise in metabolic, genetic or disease based risk factors for cancer, pancreatic, hepatic, gastrointestinal, head and neck, lung, breast, genitourinary, bone and soft tissue, or pediatric cancer whose research would be synergistic with other investigators in the department are especially encouraged to apply.



The University of Colorado School of Medicine and the Department of Pathology (administration, clinical and research faculty) are based at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, in the Denver metro area. The campus includes three major hospitals, numerous research buildings, undergraduate and graduate health associated programs including an NCI/NIH designated comprehensive cancer center, an institutional CCTSI Program and a campus wide personalized medicine initiative. The Department of Pathology is a bridge department, inclusive of basic, translational and clinical research. We employ ~120 faculty and ~300 staff and administrative personnel, including two grants administrators to support the research faculty and the Vice Chair of Research. The Department currently receives over $5M in external funding on an annual basis. Faculty have ready access to extensive shared resources, including a well-established tissue biorepository, a state of the art experimental animal facility, a research histology and animal histology lab, molecular diagnostic and cytogenetic labs, as well as shared equipment and core facilities. Our faculty are engaged in numerous clinical and preclinical trials, can hold appointments in the medical and graduate school, as well as numerous PhD and post-doctoral programs including T32 in Cancer Biology, a T32 in Head and Neck Cancer, and a SPORE program in head and neck cancer.

Salary and Benefits:

The hiring salary is

Associate Professor $89,000 to $190,000

Professor $150,000 to $250,000.

This position is not eligible for overtime compensation.

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:

Associate Professor:
  • Candidate must hold a Ph.D., M.D., or equivalent professional degree in medicine, biomedical or biological sciences.
  • An independent research focus and productivity as measured by documented accomplishments that may include but is not limited to peer reviewed publications, patents, awards, grant awards.
  • Requires a consistent record of obtaining external funding, a record of peer-reviewed publications/scholarly work, and 5-7 years' experience in leading an independent research laboratory.

Professor:
  • Candidate must hold a Ph.D., M.D., or equivalent professional degree in medicine, biomedical or biological sciences.
  • An independent research focus and productivity as measured by documented accomplishments that may include but is not limited to peer reviewed publications, patents, awards, grant awards.
  • Requires 10 or more years in biomedical research, an established record of peer-reviewed publications, and evidence of sustaining an independent research program.

Preferred qualifications
  • Extensive biomedical research
  • An established record of peer-reviewed publications
  • Evidence that the applicant has sustained an independent research program
  • A track record of leading team science

Knowledge Skills and Abilities
