Department of Pediatrics, Section of Sie Center for Down Syndrome has an opening for a full-time Director – Associate Professor or Professor (Open Rank) position.

Nature of Work:

The Department of Pediatrics at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus is one of the nation's premier academic pediatric programs. Its clinical and educational programs are consistently rated among the top 10 nationally by US News and World Report. The Department is also a leader among Child Health research programs ranking second in the nation in the most recent listing of top National Institutes of Health funded Pediatric Departments with over $61 million in active NIH awards. The Department is seeking qualified candidates for the Director of the Sie Center for Down Syndrome at the University of Colorado School of Medicine and Children's Hospital Colorado.

We are seeking a leader with a vision for advancing clinical care, research, and education to further the mission of the Center as the premier program in providing the best medical and developmental care for individuals with Down syndrome. The Sie Center for Down Syndrome opened its doors in 2011. The clinic is a center of excellence with Down syndrome medical providers, therapists, special education, mental health experts, and research staff providing comprehensive medical and developmental specialty care. The Sie Center for Down Syndrome draws a patient population base not only from Colorado and the 7 surrounding states, but also from 27 states and 8 countries. The Center has developed a close collaboration with many subspecialists within the hospital that regularly care for individuals with Down syndrome. This collaboration has led to many leading clinical research studies. The Sie Center for Down Syndrome is affiliated with The Linda Crnic Down Syndrome Research Institute and the Global Down Syndrome Foundation.

Candidates must possess a doctoral degree (MD, DO, PhD or foreign equivalent) and leadership experience, with proven collaborative leadership skills. Preferred is an individual with outstanding experience in clinical program development, a strong clinical practice background in the care for individuals with Down syndrome, an accomplished academic record, and administrative experience within a high-functioning academic pediatric program and/or children's hospital setting. While experience in clinical research is desired, dedication to the research mission of improving the lives of individuals with Down syndrome is essential. A successful candidate must have demonstrated excellence in mentoring and working with faculty, administration, and trainees from a wide range of disciplines, cultures, and academic backgrounds. Candidates should be committed to increasing the diversity and inclusion of the Center's faculty, trainees, and staff.

Position Emphasis:
  • Provide leadership organization and oversight of the programmatic and financial operations of the Center to ensure financial and human resources are fiscally sound and available to support research, clinical care, educational, and advocacy/policy activities.
  • Develops innovative clinical, educational and research programs that improve the lives of individuals with Down Syndrome and enhance the local standing and national reputation of the Center. Directs the Center's educational and clinical training programs, inclusive of residents, medical students, fellows, therapists, clinical providers, and post-doctoral researchers. Provide leadership and support for Center, Department, and University Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion initiatives and programs. Supports and directs Sie Center faculty and staff recruitment and the infrastructure for faculty development and retention. Builds and maintains partnerships with affiliate institutions and community organizations locally, nationally, and internationally. Facilitates collaboration among faculty members and the Linda Crnic Institute to expand research activities and funding and diversify research funding sources. Directs and strategically expands the Center's clinical patient care operations in both inpatient and outpatient settings (Anschutz Medical Campus, Colorado Springs, and 7-state regional outreach practices). Establishes and enforces strong metrics and outcomes for clinical and academic performance. Partners with the Children's Hospital Colorado Foundation, the University of Colorado Foundation, and the Linda Crnic Institute to develop community philanthropic support of the Center's programs and initiatives. Facilitates faculty wellness and overall job satisfaction, leading to high faculty retention. Oversees departmental compliance with annual faculty reviews, regulatory requirements, and quality improvement. Performs initial and ongoing performance evaluations and provides guidance through the academic promotion process. Facilitates collaboration across all mission areas with other Centers within the Department of Pediatrics, as well as other departments within the University of Colorado School of Medicine and other health sciences related units.

PLEASE NOTE: Candidates will be responsible for travel expenses related to the interview process and any relocation expenses, if applicable.

Salary and Benefits:

The following salary ranges for this position have been established as follows (inclusive of an anticipated administrative stipend of $25,000):

Associate Professor:
    $230,000 - $245,000 (MD/DO) $140,000 - $150,000 (PhD)

Professor:
    $285,000 - $300,000 (MD/DO) $225,000 - $240,000 (PhD)

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Minimum Qualifications

Associate Professor:

Eligibility for appointment at the Associate Professor Experience with and commitment to faculty career development through mentoring. For MD/DO candidates, must be licensed or able to obtain licensure in the State of Colorado.

Professor:
    Doctor of Medicine (MD/DO) with Board Certification in Pediatrics and American Board of Pediatrics (APB) certification in Pediatrics, Developmental Pediatrics, and/or Pediatric Genetics, or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) with academic focus in Down syndrome. 8-10 years of experience in a multi-disciplinary academic pediatric program. Eligibility for appointment at the Professor level. Experience with and commitment to faculty career development through mentoring. For MD/DO candidates, must be licensed or able to obtain licensure in the State of Colorado.

Conditions of Employment
    Must be willing and able to pass a national criminal and sex offender background check. Must be willing and able to pass a drug test.

    Vision for program development, leadership qualities, and academic experience. Able to nurture strong collaborations among faculty with diverse programmatic interests, and across campus and community partners. Strategic planning and implementation experience. Able to recruit and build on specialized areas of expertise, including research, education, clinical and/or policy/advocacy work. Strong interpersonal communication, emotional intelligence, and management skills. Ability to balance the priorities of the Center with those of the Department, Hospital, and other partners to ensure the overall goals of all entities are achieved. Strong understanding of the breadth of Down syndrome in health and science.

Preferred Qualifications
    Experience in pediatrics program development, strong clinical skills, significant accomplishments in research, proven administrative and leadership abilities, and a strong commitment to education. Experience building constructive relationships and ensuring cohesiveness among various entities, programs, and groups. Experience working and leading within an academic institution. For MD/DO candidates, an independent care provider who is highly skilled in the management of complex Down syndrome services for pediatric patients.
