Nature of Work:

The Department of Pathology at the University of Colorado School of Medicine and University of Colorado Health seeks an experienced leader and clinical pathologist at the rank of Associate Professor to Professor to serve as the Medical Director of Clinical Laboratories at the University of Colorado Hospital (UCH) and as Vice Chair of Clinical Pathology.

UCH is ranked the #1 hospital in the State of Colorado. UCH current 665-bed hospital ranks nationally in multiple specialties: pulmonology (#2), rheumatology (#11), diabetes & endocrinology (#35), gastroenterology & GI surgery (#38), ear, nose & throat (#41), rehabilitation (#41), urology (#44), and cancer (#50). UCH also has several specialties in the "high-performing" category, which means the following programs rank in the top 25 percent of the hospitals in the survey: geriatrics, neurology & neurosurgery, and orthopedics.

The Medical Director of the UCH Clinical and Laboratory Medicine practice is responsible for the oversight of numerous faculty and laboratories at a soon to be 925 bed quaternary care hospital and also facilitates integration of clinical pathology across our multi-site of practice UC Health System as Medical Director of Lab Services (DLS). The Medical Director and DLS serve as a leadership dyad to ensure alignment with the mission, values, and objectives of the University of Colorado Hospital and System. The Medical Director also serves as the senior University of Colorado Hospital (UCH) clinical pathologist will interfaces with laboratory, department, school and hospital leadership to promote quality, efficiency, and optimize patient care.

The Medical Director also serves as the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) laboratory director and the College of American Pathologists (CAP) laboratory director and maintains the certificate of accreditation. The Medical director also provides active service on Hospital and University committees, medical staff functions representing the UCH Clinical Laboratories and faculty in clinical pathology.

In collaboration with the Laboratory Director, (technical and administrative leader) the Medical Director develops and implements departmental strategy, goals, plans and standards consistent with the clinical, administrative, legal, and ethical requirements/objectives of UCHealth. Working in conjunction the two positions prepares, monitors, and evaluates departmental budgets, and ensures that the department operates in compliance with allocated funding. They also direct and evaluate departmental operations, including information technologies, service level determination, and complaint management, to achieve performance and quality control objectives.

The Medical Director also serves as a Vice Chair of Clinical Pathology for the Department of Pathology, providing additional leadership and professional responsibilities to the Pathology Chair including: recruitment, retention, oversight and mentoring of junior faculty in clinical pathology, faculty evaluation, OPPE/FPPE, and continuing education activities. Engagement in translational research with scholarly productivity is expected, as well as mentoring others in these activities.

Employment Expectations:

• Facilitate clinical care, administrative management, teaching and research missions of the UCH Clinical Laboratory and the Department of Pathology.

• Routinely interpret serum protein electrophoresis tests, assays for hemoglobin variants, and other clinical laboratory tests.

• Lead the optimization of laboratory utilization.

• Use the clinical and laboratory information systems to analyze and automate pathologist/scientist workflow processes to make professional time more effective. This includes pre-analytic, analytic and post-analytic variables that improve pathologist efficiency, quality, cost, compliance, and workplace satisfaction.

• Educate medical students, residents, fellows, and laboratory staff.

• Engage in translational research, clinical research, or both.

• Participate in departmental, school, and professional committees.

• Participate in multidisciplinary clinical care reviews.

• Active participation in quality programs, attentiveness to risk management and reduction, as well as clinical practice standards of the College of American Pathology.

Salary and Benefits:

The salary range (or hiring range) has been established at:

Associate Prof $250,000 to $390,000 Professor $300,000 to $500,000

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

MD or DO

Completion of CP or AP/CP Residency in Pathology with board certification in CP or AP/CP by the American Board of Pathology.

Fellowship training or PhD in a subspecialty of clinical pathology or related basic sciences

At least 8 years of experience as a laboratory director or assistant lab director, or section leader in an academic medical system hospital.

Qualify for a full unrestricted license to practice pathology in the State of Colorado.

Associate Professor:

At least 8 years of experience in academic clinical pathology is required. Clinical, teaching and scholarship accomplishments sufficient for an appointment at the rank of Associate Professor, regular (tenure eligible) track required.

Professor:

Same as above with at least 12 years of experience in academic clinical pathology is required. Clinical, teaching and scholarship accomplishments sufficient for an appointment at the rank of Professor, regular (tenure eligible) track required.

Preferred Qualifications:

Additional subspecialty fellowship training and/or experience in additional areas of clinical pathology will be given preference. Individuals with a national stature in clinical pathology and laboratory medicine are desired.
