Job Summary
The School of Education at the University of Colorado Boulder seeks one full-time, non-tenure track assistant teaching professor in the Literacy Studies program beginning in the 2022-2023 academic year. We seek to hire a faculty member who is committed to teacher education focused on the preparation of elementary teachers in reading and literacy who will work with culturally and linguistically diverse students in a program committed to educational equity and justice.

This new faculty member will demonstrate evidence of U.S.-based K-5 teaching as well as experience teaching university undergraduate or graduate elementary teacher education courses in literacy. In addition, the successful applicant will show evidence of strong knowledge and skills in K-5 reading instruction. These will include expertise in K-3 reading skills and strategies in alignment with Colorado's requirements for evidence-based reading instruction and teacher preparation.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be
The Assistant Teaching Professor in Literacy will be expected to teach in, and contribute to the development and growth of our BA in Elementary Education program, which prepares teachers for elementary licensure and Colorado’s Endorsement in Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Education. They will additionally contribute to the Master of Arts program in Curriculum and Instruction, Literacy Education (with Reading Teacher Endorsement).

Coursework in the BA and MA programs include children’s literature, foundations of reading/literacy, reading and writing methods, reading assessment and intervention. Some of these courses require a concurrent practicum or field experience. This faculty member will also contribute to discussions about school partnerships and preservice teacher placements (in collaboration with the Office of Field Experiences), and the connections between practicum, student teaching, and literacy coursework. This new member of our community will engage in activities surrounding the mission of the School of Education including participation in outreach and leadership in local, school, campus, and larger Communities.

What We Can Offer
The successful candidate will likely be appointed as an assistant teaching professor. Anticipated starting salary for a full time academic year position is $60,000-65,000 for assistant teaching professor rank and $65,500 - 75,000 for associate teaching professor rank. Rank is determined by years of teaching experience. Salary can be paid over 9 or 12 months. Benefits remain active over summer. Candidates can elect for an optional research/creative element in their duties up to 10% of their appointment. Additional opportunities for teaching and research/creative work or service projects up to 3/9ths of AY salary may be available during the summer.

What We Require
  • PhD (conferred by August 2022) in Literacy Education, Reading Education, Early Childhood, or closely related fields from an accredited university.
  • At least three years (or equivalent) of teaching experience in U.S.-based K-5 classrooms.
  • Elementary (K-5) or early elementary education (preK-2) teaching license.
  • Experience teaching university-level courses for pre-service or in-service teachers, in one or more of the following areas: Elementary Reading Methods, Elementary Writing Methods, Reading Assessment and Intervention.

What We Would Like You To Have
  • Experience teaching in diverse public schools, serving economically, linguistically, and culturally diverse communities.
  • Specialized or leadership positions in Elementary Literacy/Reading (e.g., literacy specialist, reading interventionist, literacy coach) or supporting students experiencing specific reading difficulties.
  • Experience partnering with schools and school districts in research, professional development, after-school literacy tutoring, or related literacy efforts.
  • Supervision or coaching of teaching candidates in elementary schools.
