Job Overview

An NSF-funded post-doctoral position for 1 year is available in the laboratories of Dr. Michal Polak and Dr. Joshua Benoit on host-parasite interactions at the University of Cincinnati. The post-doctoral scientist will collaborate with the co-principal investigators to study the proximate genetic bases of ectoparasite resistance and of associated life-history trade-offs in two naturally occurring Drosophila-mite model systems. These studies will be strongly multi-disciplinary, and include host behavioral and physiological assays, bioinformatics and functional genomics. The post-doc will train in a vibrant and nationally recognized academic setting, and will be supported to develop their own research directions within the framework of the grant. The position offers a competitive salary and will help cover relocation costs.

The target start date, though flexible, is September 1, 2022.

Essential Functions
  • Conduct research experiments in a particular field within the pre-determined research scope and methodology.
  • Gather and analyze data and develop new ideas that promote current research.
  • Prepare data summaries, reports, manuscripts and presentations of research results.
  • Participate/assist in manuscript writing for publication in scientific journals and/or presentation; may assist in grant writing.
  • Keep informed of developments in field to maintain and enhance professional expertise.
  • Lab maintenance, including equipment maintenance and ordering of supplies, as needed.
  • May teach techniques to others, train, and mentor junior research staff.
  • Engage in appropriate training and professional development opportunities.
  • Play an active role in seeking career and research advice, both from the faculty supervisor and from other faculty members as well.
Required Education
  • Ph.D. in Entomology, Biology or related field.
  • Publications in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Experience with bioinformatics analyses, functional genomics, basic molecular biology/physiology techniques, and/or host-parasite systems, is desired.
