Executive Director of Public Affairs and Communications
Reed College, one of the nation’s premier liberal arts institutions, seeks an experienced, strategic and creative professional to develop further and implement a comprehensive public relations and marketing communications plan for the college. The Executive Director of Public Affairs and Communications will work with college leadership, faculty and staff to identify, define and communicate the college’s distinctive qualities and maintain and enhance the college’s reputation among its most important constituencies and the public. The mission of Public Affairs and Communications includes positioning the college as a thoughtful and credible voice on broad societal issues and higher education.
The Executive Director will manage the college’s crisis communications and media relations, its web presence, creative services, social media, internal communications, community and government relations, major events and presidential communications.
The Executive Director will be a member of the President’s senior staff and provide public relations counsel to the president and college leadership on a wide range of issues confronting the college and requiring management and response. The Executive Director will manage a staff of 17 and will oversee strategies and programs that engage the college’s key constituencies, including prospective students, families, alumni, donors and supporters, faculty, staff, students, government officials and the news media.
Under the leadership of the Executive Director, the Public Affairs and Communications team plays an important role in major outreach functions of the college, including:
• Developing and implementing a marketing communications plan that will attract
high-caliber students in collaboration with the Office of Admission and Financial Aid.
• In coordination with the Office of Development and Alumni Relations, building engagement and support among Reed alumni, families and friends, including writing and production of Reed Magazine, published quarterly.
• Enhancing understanding of Reed’s contributions and strengthening the college’s reputation as a purposeful, creative and intellectual community.
• Together with the Office of Institutional Diversity, advancing and promoting the college’s efforts to strengthen Reed’s growing and demonstrated commitments to diversity, equity and inclusion.
The successful candidate will demonstrate an understanding of the synergy of communications channels and the ability to maximize the impact of content across those channels. The candidate will have exceptional written and verbal communications skills and in-depth knowledge of how technology can be used to communicate efficiently and effectively.
