The University of Colorado Anschutz College of Nursing has openings for part-time/hourly and full-time (1.0 FTE) salaried Bilingual Medical Assistant I positions within its federally qualified community health center, Sheridan Health Services (SHS), located in southwest Denver, CO (zip code: 80236). Positions below 0.50 FTE are not eligible for benefits, while positions at 0.50 FTE and greater are eligible for benefits. Positions at the Health Care Tech I level are Medical Assistant I's, and positions at the Health Care Tech III level are Licensed Practical Nurses. We are offering a recruitment incentive for those hired in addition to the base salary listed below.

Nature of Work:

The University of Colorado, College of Nursing, is seeking a Bilingual Health Care Tech for a (1.0 FTE) benefits-eligible position at Sheridan Health Services (SHS), a Federally Qualified Health Center located in southwest Denver, CO (zip code: 80236). Health Care Techs support specific service lines within the clinic (pediatrics, primary care, obstetrics, and behavioral health) but will be cross-trained to work across those areas as well.

Health Care Tech I / Medical Assistant I

These positions will primarily provide quality care to patients at the Family Health Clinic site and may be asked to see patients at the Youth Health Clinic as well. Applicants should be educated and trained as Medical Assistants (MAs), Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs), or Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT's).

Health Care Tech III / Licensed Practical Nurse

The Licensed Practice Nurse (LPN) functions under the supervision and guidance of an Registered Nurse (RN)/Case Manager and participates in the multi-disciplinary process of providing care and treatment to patients. The LPN will provide direct and indirect patient care in accordance with the Nurse Practice Act, professional standards of care, state regulations and accreditation standards and University of Colorado (CU) philosophy, policies, and procedures. The LPN works to facilitate clinic workflow, provides patient education, and ensures patients receive test results and seamless delivery of care for each patient.

Clinic Description:

Sheridan Health Services is a multi-site, nurse-managed federally qualified community health center, funded through the Health Resources and Services Administration Bureau of Primary Healthcare; and is a collaborative effort between the College of Nursing and the Sheridan School District. There are now 52 employees at two convenient locations to serve community health needs primarily for residents of Arapahoe, Denver and Jefferson counties. A Youth Health Clinic is located in the Sheridan School District Administration building. The Family Health Clinic is located in southwest Denver on the Fort Logan campus and provides services to adults and children, 65% of whom identify at Latinx, and 42% of whom are best served in another language, with Spanish being the predominant second language. Services offered include primary care across the lifespan; prenatal and postpartum, gynecology, dentistry, pharmacy, behavioral health, and outpatient substance abuse treatment. Sheridan Health Services is a Patient-Centered Medical Home, and as such, we uphold a model of care that places the patient at the center, incorporating the values and beliefs of the patient in all decision-making. Direct supervision will be provided by the Nurse Case Manager.

Examples of Work Performed at All Levels:
    Work with kids, however the position requires the ability to work with both pediatric and adult populations and the ability to flex between adult, pediatric and behavioral health /psychiatric clinics, as staffing needs arise.
  • Demonstrate sensitivity to the challenges of patients with reduced access to economic and health resources, and demonstrate enthusiasm to help support these patients both in the clinics and remotely by phone or Tele-Health (Zoom).
  • Speak Spanish and English on a daily basis, communicating clinical terminology to patients and colleagues.
  • Greet patients and families courteously and completing standard patient check-in procedures in person and remotely using Tele-Health and other technology.

• Utilize the Electronic Health Record (EHR) to:
    measure and document vital signs and notify providers of out-of-range values review and complete medication reconciliation accurately document the patient's chief complaint and health history Prepare and coach patients for provider examinations and assisting providers with examinations and procedures, as needed
  • Perform standard patient screening tests using apps and advanced technological tools for secure HIPAA compliant communication workflow in the clinic (high speed laptops, iPads, MS Teams /Jabber)
  • Perform phlebotomy and following safe lab procedures for the proper collection and handling of other lab specimens
  • Perform basic wound care and first aid
  • Provide patient education with regard to office policies, lab results medications, diagnoses, treatment, plan of care, and follow-up phone calls
  • Prepare, administer and electronically document medications within scope (i.e.Depo-Provera) with provider authorization
  • Administer immunization, maintain immunizations records and complete annual immunization training within timeline set by supervisor
  • Perform clerical and administrative duties regularly and as needed, including covering front desk staff, and answering overflow incoming calls during absences and busy times.
  • Courteously answer phone and schedule appointments, fax and upload orders, internal and external records/report
  • Work with MA team to maintain supply inventory through tracking and stocking, including maintenance of sterilized instruments. Also places orders for replacements through Compliance Officer
  • Faxe prescriptions to the pharmacy as requested by providers and participates in insurance Prior Authorizations (PARs), as needed
  • Engage with community partners as needed including public health agencies, specialty/outside provider offices, local hospitals and free-standing healthcare facilities
  • Attend regular team huddles, team meetings and staff meeting as part of performance expectations.
  • Utilize robust CU learning and development opportunities to further knowledge and grow in position
  • Performs additional miscellaneous job duties as assigned

Examples of Work Performed at Specific Levels:

At the Health Care Tech III / Licensed Practical Nurse

In addition to the examples of work performed at all levels, positions at the Health Care Tech III / Licensed Practical Nurse level will:
    Practice within scope of practice perimeters as inferred by licensure, standard nursing practice, knowledge, skill level, and clinical practice guidelines. Provide direct and indirect patient care that meets physical, psychosocial and general aspects of care, reflecting initiative, responsibility, concern and indicative of professional expectations. Monitor patient's condition by observing, collecting, reporting, and recording objective/subjective data; identifies changes in the patient's condition; collect data and report sign and symptoms of deviation from normal health status, symptoms and/or reactions to medications and treatments; initiates appropriate standard emergency procedures and reports adverse patient conditions to physician, Nursing Supervisor or registered nurse (RN). Perform routine and specialized nursing procedures following registered nurse and nurse practitioner directives and approved nursing care plan, e.g. administer treatments, medications and provide specialized nursing care to acutely ill patients. Communicate with registered nurses, nurse practitioners and team members about changes in patient's clinical condition, including results of diagnostic studies and symptomatology. Receive training in referral and case management, as appropriate. Assist in preparing prescription refills for providers and according to policy, as necessary.

Salary and Benefits:
    At the Health Care Tech I / Medical Assistant I level the salary range has been established at $41,600 - $43,680 annually. At the Health Care Tech III / Licensed Practical Nurse level the starting salary has been established at $49,500 annually.

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

This position is eligible for overtime compensation.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Graduate from an accredited medical assistant, nursing assistant, licensed practical nurse, or emergency medical technician school/program

Substitutions:
  • One year of medical assistant, nursing assistant, LPN, or EMT experience may substitute for graduation from an accredited program in those fields.
  • Completion of one year of an accredited registered nursing program may substitute for graduation from an accredited medical assistant, nursing assistant, licensed practical nurse, or emergency medical technician school/program

Conditions of Employment:
    Must be willing and able to obtain current BLS/CPR certification by date of hire. Must be willing and able to speak Spanish and English on a daily basis to communicate clinical terminology. Qualifications & Competencies - Health Care Tech III / Licensed Practical Nurse
  • Graduate from an accredited licensed practical nurse (LPN) or licensed vocational nurse (LVN) school/program
  • Current PN or VN licensure in good standing (any state)
  • Could be working toward CO clinical license during application process and registered with DORA-Department of Regulatory Agencies. Must have CO licensure by date of hire.
  • 6 months of experience working in healthcare related field

Substitution:

Completion of an accredited registered nursing (RN) program may substitute for graduation from an accredited licensed practical nurse (LPN) or licensed vocational nurse (LVN) school/program.
