The mission of UCCS Dining and Hospitality Services (DHS) is to NOURISH and ENGAGE the campus community.

DHS is comprised of two residential dining facilities, a retail café, one campus pub, four coffee locations, and full-service catering. DHS is an award-winning dining program that serves approximately 1 million meals per year across all operations.

The University of Colorado Colorado Springs campus has a full-service catering operation that serves over 1000 events per year, ranging from 10 to more than 500. Under the general supervision of the Catering Manager, and in conjunction with the Catering Chef, this position is responsible for executing catered events. Working closely with the Banquet Manager, this position will have a presence at events and ensure adequate staffing for all catered functions. Working directly with the Catering Manager and Event Services staff, the Assistant Catering Manager will communicate with event planners onsite to ensure a high-level service and successful events. The Assistant Catering Manager will assist the Banquet Manager in supervising the Catering student managers and student employees and must be committed to student employment and professional development opportunities for students.

Job Duties:

Personnel Management 20%

Assist in the day-to-day training, on-boarding, and supervision of staff. Ensures staff understands and follows all unit specific policies and procedures. Provides daily hands-on training with the goal of staff being able to work independently. Ensures the continuing progress of staff through the established student assistant program to meet the department's development goals. Discusses issues with the catering management team and collaborates on the best solution. Makes recommendations to the catering management team regarding staffing requirements and training needed for the department based on the knowledge of the staff's skill set. Display and demonstrate excellent communication skills. Provides on-going coaching to staff so that they can become a valuable, contributing, independent employee.

Catering Implementation 50%

Provides hands-on supervision for both on-premises and off-premises catering orders by assigning tasks to staff. Ensuring tasks are completed in a timely manner and monitoring of catering orders from beginning to end. This includes conferring with event planners, culinary staff, bakery staff, set- up crew, clients, guests, and catering staff to deliver catering orders with high customer satisfaction. Works with clients to troubleshoot and problem solve. Navigates customer complaints and is empowered to make decisions in the best interest of the operations and its guests. May make changes on-site with staffing assignments or set up to meet the needs of the client. Coordinates the use of catering vehicles and may be responsible for operating campus vehicles. Supervises events and/ or ensure that properly trained personnel are scheduled for regular events and where alcoholic beverages are served.

Quality Assurance and Food Safety 15%

Ensures all foods are being handled properly following established guidelines. Ensures alcohol is being handled according to established University policies as well as state regulations. Trains staff on food safety and presentation as set by policy and department standards. Assist in the creation of standardized operating procedures and training methods. May work with the chef and culinary team to find a replacement option or different presentation of product to ensure the quality and presentation is up to established standards. Comply and enforce sanitation regulations and safety standards.

Administrative Support 10%

Assist catering managers with design and implementation of all catering orders. Assists with disseminating information to staff to ensure details of catering orders are delivered per the client's expectations. Will be assigned various projects related to the catering department i.e. linen ordering, monthly inventory, liquor ordering, bar management and sitting on committees. Utilize food management software to plan and execute catering orders. Assists in the payroll process by entering and auditing student timecards. This position requires a high level of customer service skill, knowledge of event management, crisis management, and professional approach. This is a full-time position and requires the flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays. Other duties as assigned.

Job Competencies:

Demonstrated ability and experience supervising, scheduling, and motivating part-time, full-time, and temporary student staff across multi-shift needs.

Experience with or aptitude to learn and use event management and scheduling software.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Organized and able to manage multiple events with multiple deadlines, on own or with back-up.

Able to engage multiple types of customers within the university community.

Able to meet the needs of customers quickly and effectively at UCCS events.

Flexible work style and attitude with a willingness to work as a member of a fast-paced team.

Assumes full departmental responsibility when the Catering Manager is absent.

Able to work independently in ambiguous situations with little direction.

Self-starting, innovative thinker who is eager to create and develop new programs and initiatives.

Knowledge of liquor purchasing rotation and inventory. Basic knowledge of alcohol service regulations and legal-age enforcement issues including TIPS certification.

Knowledge issuing and closing cash drawers; and operating knowledge of credit card machines

Standard computer knowledge (Microsoft Excel, Word, e-mail, POS systems) is also required

Ability to work a flexible schedule, including nights and weekends.

Ability to meet physical demands of lifting (up to 50 pounds occasionally and 25 pounds regularly) and standing for long periods of time

This position has been determined to be eligible for overtime (non-exempt) under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).

What We Offer:

Salary: $45,275 - $60,367

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty, and training.

    Qualifications
    Minimum Qualifications:

      At least Three (3) years of progressive experience as a catering supervisor or event planner in a complex food service organization or conference center.

      Or In lieu of experience, an associate degree in related field with one year of experience as a catering supervisor or event planner.

    • Valid Servsafe certification or the ability to obtain Servsafe certification within 6 months of hire. Must maintain valid Servsafe certification for the duration of employment with Campus Dining Services.

    Physical Requirements:

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to move. Employee is occasionally required to have moderate bending, crouching, reaching, handling, fingering, moderate energy requirements, tasting/smelling, depth perception, color vision and good field of vision.
