Job Profile Title

Temporary Employee - Non-Exempt

Job Description Summary

The Free State Slavery and Bound Labor Project of the Penn Carey Law School and the History Department of the University of Pennsylvania is currently seeking a temporary part-time archivist, starting in mid-August or early September, and continuing throughout the 2022-23 academic year. The archivist will be responsible for working with digital sources, including statutes, caselaw, correspondence, and newspaper stories, among others. The period covered by the project runs from the late revolutionary era (about 1780) through the end of the Civil War (1865). The project is co-directed by Kathleen Brown and Sarah Barringer Gordon, with support from the Price Lab, the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, the McNeil Center for Early American Studies, and other local and regional archives and scholarly groups.

Job Description

The archivist will be part of a team that will design the project website, create a metadata template for managing sources, and assembling supporting materials, such as a glossary of nineteenth-century legal terms, research and outreach for collection of additional sources, and on occasion answering students’ questions.

Qualified applicants will have library and archival experience, and familiarity with legal materials will be especially useful. Most of the work is focused on Pennsylvania, particularly Philadelphia, as the central battleground over slavery in both geographic and legal terms.

The position will pay $30/hour for a maximum of 1,000 hours over a calendar year. Hours will average 20 per week, but will vary according to the stage of the project. Applications should include a cover letter, CV, and references, and will be considered on a rolling basis.
