Job Description
The Clinical Transformational Research Informatics Center (CTRIC) at the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) is recruiting for one Research Specialist, Clinical. This position is responsible for assisting with the performance of research projects in a clinical setting, including recruitment of potential study subjects and collection and organization of data. This position is expected to work independently and know and apply the fundamental concepts, practices and procedures of particular field of specialization.  CTRIC is a service center at the University of Maryland, Baltimore School of Medicine (UMSOM). Our purpose is to accelerate the translation of scientific discoveries from the basic science bench to clinical studies, bedside practice, and community intervention, through use of information technologies and informatics. This position is eligible to telework between 1-2 days per week.  UMB offers a comprehensive benefits package that prioritizes wellness, work/life balance, and professional development.   • Perform and direct studies and/or project(s). Develop, recommend, modify and implement policies and procedures and/or methods for clinical research. Develop protocol manuals and data collection instruments. Participate in the design of research studies.
  • Perform clinical research activities including advanced data analysis using statistical software such as SAS, SPSS, and R; data management (collection, entry, verification); data interpretation, and ensures compliance and clinical relevance of data.
  • Searches relevant literature, develops conclusions on research findings, writes reports, prepare and deliver presentations of relevant findings and conclusions, and recommends appropriate actions. Conduct library research and contributes to the preparation and writing of research findings for publication of journal articles and grant proposals.
  • Manages interaction with subject participants including eligibility screening, recruitment, enrollment, ensuring informed consent is properly secured and documented, counseling, and obtaining patient medical history. Obtains tissue and blood samples as necessary and collects information through interviews, questionnaires, test results, and charts.
  • Perform Institutional Review Board (IRB) and Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA) protocol development and ensure compliance of research operations with protocols.
  • Serves as liaison to other departments, outside organizations, government agencies, and product representatives to promote effective and efficient operation and use of resources.
  • Perform administrative duties such as providing training and guidance to students and other clinical staff, attending research meetings, and assisting with contract negotiations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Qualifications
Education: Bachelors in epidemiology, sociology, psychology, nursing or field of study related to the research of the clinic.  Experience: Three (3) years of experience in clinical research including two (2) years in the relevant research specialization. Experience using REDCap (Research Electronic Data Capture) software is preferred. Other:  May require training related to occupational safety and health, environmental compliance, shipping of hazardous materials and/or ionizing radiation. Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
  • Ability to understand and utilize scientific/medical terminology and research theory in both oral and written communications. Ability to understand and apply approved guidelines of varying research protocols. Knowledge of best practice in research protocols and procedures. Ability to gain knowledge and meet the reporting needs of UMB policies and practices for Institutional Review, Human Protections, Animal Protections and other the like.  Ability to maintain high standards with the work being performed and maintain awareness with trends and influences.  Assumes personal responsibility for all outcomes; makes effective and timely decisions; and learns how to effectively use technology. 
  • Skill in various interviewing techniques. Skill in data abstraction and entry into study specific database software applications. Skill in statistical interpretation and data analysis using statistical software as well as spreadsheet and database software applications.
  • Ability to effectively communicate thoughts, ideas, and facts verbally and in writing.  Write and present information in a clear and concise way.  Interpret and understand written information and is able to listen attentively to verbal and non-verbal cues that lead to a deeper understanding.  Ability to maintain confidentiality of subjects and information obtained. Ability to network with and provide information to key groups and individuals. Ability to work as part of a team.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with others and demonstrates professional, ethical, respectful, and courteous behavior when interacting with others.  Capable of interacting pleasantly and positively with other to meet customer expectations and provide follow up with customers. 
  • Ability to use measurable and verifiable information for making decisions or judgements. Excellent organizational and project management skills. Ability to use a consultative approach to resolve issues in area of responsibility. 
Salary Range: Between $63,000 and $67,000. Salary is commensurate with education and experience of selected candidates.  UMB is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer.
