Position and Qualifications
Biology is consistently one of the three most popular undergraduate majors at Hollins, and the department offers both B.A. and B.S. degrees. We provide our majors with a firm grounding in the breadth of biology and the opportunity to focus on upper-level courses in the sub-field of their choice. Our majors are further bolstered by support from the dynamic network of Hollins alumnae/i, as well as connections within the Roanoke community. Additionally, our Biology faculty are actively engaged in and supported in their research endeavors and are committed to providing opportunities and mentorship for undergraduate research. Our annual Science Seminar, currently in its 64th year, highlights student research in STEM. We have developed unique travel/research short-term courses to Ecuador and the Caribbean, as well as specialty courses designed to engage Hollins students who pursue majors within the liberal arts.
We are also committed to fostering change. In collaboration with Education faculty, the Biology Department is a recipient of an NSF Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship Capacity Building Grant that will allow the university to realign its biology and education curricula to better support students from diverse backgrounds in their pursuit of a STEM degree and licensure in secondary education. We invite candidates with a Ph.D. (or who will have one in hand by July 1, 2023) in biology with expertise in molecular/cellular biology to apply for this position. The successful candidate will be a teacher-scholar with experience teaching at the molecular/cellular level, evidence of scholarly accomplishment, and a strong commitment to teaching excellence and innovation at a liberal arts institution. Preference will be given to candidates who value mentoring students who are first-generation, limited-income, and/or from historically underrepresented groups in STEM.
The position carries the equivalent of six courses per academic year (each laboratory section receives 0.5 teaching credits). The successful candidate will teach the sophomore level core lecture and laboratory course in molecular and cellular biology each year, as well as offer an upper-level lecture and laboratory course in genetics every other year. The successful candidate will also have the chance to develop and offer at least one upper-level molecular or cellular course in their field of interest, to contribute to the general education curriculum (including specialty courses for the non-scientists or first-year seminars), and to teach on rotation in the Biology department’s Sophomore Seminar and Senior Capstone courses.
Additional duties include service to the department and university, such as student mentorship and advising; supervision of undergraduate internships, research, and theses; and active participation in campus-wide faculty governance. Hollins offers support for pre-tenure faculty including funding for travel and research, professional development, and pre-tenure course releases.
