About the Department:

NC State’s Office of Information Technology (OIT) provides campus-wide computing, information and communication technology services in support of the university’s academic and administrative goals.
OIT Shared Services provides a broad range of core services to support information technology and the mission of NC State. These services include: authentication and directory services; enterprise web and middleware services; cloud services; storage and server infrastructure; Windows and Linux deployment and configuration management; monitoring and notification services; automated workload scheduling; and research computing services.

Essential Job Duties:

This Secure Systems Architect position provides technical leadership and cross-team collaboration and coordination for the secure university research environment (SURE) and enterprise environment to meet current and future compliance requirements.
Specifically, this position is responsible for the ongoing design, coordination, and integration of secure research environments that protect the confidentiality, integrity and availability of the organization’s controlled unclassified information and other sensitive research data in accordance with legal, regulatory, and institutional requirements. This position will work closely with the Office of Research and Innovation (ORI), researchers, OIT Security and Compliance, and other OIT teams to architect the secure research environment and its integration with other enterprise services. This position will work closely with OIT teams to ensure that required services (such as identity management, authentication, monitoring, etc) are appropriately integrated with enterprise services and well supported by the relevant teams.
Additional responsibilities include onboarding new projects into the secure research environment – identifying project infrastructure and middleware requirements and developing architecture to meet project requirements within available budget constraints. Periodic review of existing project deployments to ensure they are continuing to efficiently and effectively meet project requirements and comply with relevant security standards.

Minimum Education and Experience:

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or an Information Technology degree or closely related field from an appropriately accredited institution plus four years of experience in IT supporting enterprise and cloud based services; or Bachelor’s degree from an appropriately accredited institution and six years of experience in supporting enterprise IT environments or closely related area; or an Associate’s degree in Information Systems from an appropriately accredited institution and eight years of experience in supporting enterprise IT environments or closely related area; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Other Required Qualifications:

  • Practical skills and experience in cloud (ex. AWS, Azure, Google) and/or on-premise and hybrid architectures.
  • Experience or exposure to security compliance and security controls (e.g., NIST 800-171, NIST 800-53, or CMMC).
  • Experience in architecting or engineering of enterprise solutions in one or more of these areas: cloud services, middleware and web design.
  • Experience with Linux administration skills and good understanding of configuration management and log management.
  • Experience in developing strategies and/or solutions for enterprise business requirements.
  • Experience working as an effective team member.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Six or more years of experience in the information technology field. Ability to work across teams and with subject matter experts to meet university goals.
  • Expertise in information technology support and good understanding of security compliance within an enterprise and academic research space. (Knowledge of NIST 800-171, NIST 800-53, or CMMC)
  • Experience supporting large enterprise hypervisor environments (such as VMware), directory services (such as Active Directory), identity management (such as Oracle Identity Manager), web services (such as Oracle Web Logic) Skilled at supporting compliance environments.
  • Experience developing IT to support research activities. Experience supporting research IT services.
  • Strong technical writing skills and experience with the development of technical and procedural documentation.
  • Coordination of multiple vendor solutions in a university environment.
  • Advanced troubleshooting skills.
  • Exceptional communication skills with various types of audiences such as research administration, students, faculty, and IT support staff.
