Department Description:

USD School of Law is one of the 84 law schools elected to the Order of the Coif, a national honor society for law school graduates. Detailed Description:

As a member of the public services and reference teams, provides research and reference services to all LRC patrons. Presents training and instruction in the use of legal research tools in all formats, including teaching legal research in the first year Legal Writing and Research (LWR) classes, seminars, clinics, and advanced legal research courses. Creates and updates training materials, tracks new developments in legal education and practical skills training, and actively participates in the reference team’s efforts to provide excellent legal research instruction. Assists in the development, implementation, evaluation, and revision of research and reference services, policies, and procedures. Participates in collection development including the assessment of subscription databases. Oversees and coordinates student services and technology services. Supervises circulation staff and student assistants in the absence of other professional staff. Takes on and oversees projects as assigned.

Duties and Responsibilities

Faculty Services

    Oversees and coordinates instructional support services for Law School and University faculty.Oversees and coordinates the provision of research and reference services in support of faculty scholarly projects, including maintaining a system for tracking time spent on faculty projects.Trains, supervises, and evaluates the LRC’s student research assistants.Oversees and coordinates outreach to faculty, including: maintaining a system for tracking faculty research interests and preferences regarding research and reference services; periodically surveying faculty on how well the LRC is meeting scholarly and instructional needs and areas for improvement or growth; and regularly communicating with faculty about available LRC resources and services.Keeps abreast of and disseminates information about new teaching techniques and tools that may be of use to faculty.
Reference Services

    Offers reference service during regularly scheduled reference desk hours, including some evening and weekend hours; follows up on responses to inquiries that cannot be completed during shifts at the desk. Provides assistance in legal research methods to faculty and students; assists patrons in the use of resources in all formats.Serves in rotation on LRC and campus committees as assigned.
Research Services

    Conducts research to respond to patron research requests.Produces research and informational guides and training materials.
Teaching/Training Services

    Presents training and instruction in the use of legal research tools in all formats, including teaching legal research in the first year LWR courses, seminars, and clinics.Teaches advanced legal research classes as assigned.Creates and updates training materials.Tracks new developments in legal education and practical skills training.Actively participates in the reference team’s efforts to provide excellent legal research instruction.
Supervision

    Works closely with the LRC’s student research assistants on faculty projects, providing much of the day-to-day supervision of the student research assistant.Assists in circulation services and support as needed; supervises circulation workers in the absence of other professional staff.
Management/Outreach Services

    Serves as back-up to the Head of Reference for communication of library policies and procedures to patrons; deals with patron problems or disputes.Assists in circulation services and support as neededWorks with the public services team to develop, evaluate, implement and revise research guides and training materials,Works with the Head of Reference to plan and implement new policies, procedures, and servicesRepresents the LRC through professional involvement in local and national organizations, and by writing for publication.

Job Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:

    J.D. degree from an ABA-accredited law schoolM.L.S. degree from an ALA-accredited library school
Preferred Qualifications:

    Law library experience (academic setting strongly preferred)Public services experienceReference experienceInterest in tax, serving one of the nation’s top tax LLM programsEmpirical research experience including collection, cleaning, and organization of datasetsKnowledge and familiarity with citation styles, including Bluebook and Chicago Manual of StyleUnderstanding of educational methods, goals and mission of higher education as they apply to public services in an ABA-accredited law school library

Posting Salary:
