Overview

The Research Services department of Princeton University Library is hiring a Special Collections Assistant to join a small team to provide support to Firestone Microforms Service Unit. This position directly supports patrons who use microformat materials, manages a number of student workers, and works with digitization, hardware, software and technical support for microformats. Firestone’s microformat materials are unique in many respects, and include materials in several languages and from many parts of the world. This position works closely with subject librarians to plan out digitization projects, and also works directly in the Library’s ALMA-based catalog. Please note that this position does not work with special collections or archives.

Responsibilities
  • Direct support of patrons including faculty, graduate students, undergraduate students, and external researchers in the Microforms unit and at other patron service points including the Access Desk and Information Desk. 
  • Staff the Microforms Service and manage the students who do the same. Help patrons learn how to use the microform readers, answer questions and help find materials.
  • Circulation operations to manage and coordinate patron requests from Recap
  • Supervision of undergraduate student workers.
  • Digitization of microfilm collections both patron-driven and directed by library-wide digitization initiatives.
  • Conduct digitization of microfilm, handle minor digital editing of files, and ingest files to Princeton University Library’s repository.
  • Use digitization software and hardware.
  • Act as patron-supporting backup staff for the Access Desk and Information Desk.
  • Collaborate with team members in the Documents Processing unit to support general library needs.

 

Qualifications

Required:

  • Three years of library (or equivalent academic) experience that demonstrates the ability to provide responsive and welcoming public service.
  • High School degree
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a variety of researchers and library staff in written and oral form
  • Ability to function within a small team working collaboratively
  • Ability to manage time and projects effectively
  • Facility with bibliographic and web-based search engines
  • Experience with spreadsheets such as Microsoft Excel
  • Intermediate level computer skills including proficiency in scanning operations, and basic knowledge of computer hardware, printers, and imaging equipment

 

Preferred:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Research service and library public service orientation
  • Working knowledge of ALMA or other library integrated library system
  • Working knowledge of image editing software and scanning workflows
  • Working knowledge of digitization workflows
  • Working knowledge of microform readers and hardware troubleshooting
