Job Summary/Basic Function:

Course Name: EDEL 461/462: Student Teaching and Seminar –

Course Description: Students must satisfactorily complete student teaching in order to qualify for certification. Seminar sessions are required. Students in the dual certification elementary and special education program must have one experience in an elementary classroom and one experience in a special education classroom or/and full-time practicum experiences where students have an opportunity to apply educational strategies and interventions for students with mild, moderate and severe disabilities.

Course Name: SPED 651: Accomplished SPED Advocacy

Course Description: This course orientates the student with advanced opportunities, roles, and skills available to the accomplished special education teacher. Students will learn how to be effective advocates for students and their families, as well as how to develop leadership skills in the special education classroom and beyond. Emphasis will be placed on relevant professional organizations and careers that highlight special education advocacy and leadership. This course requires both in-class instruction and out of class application. Regular access to a special education classroom is highly recommended.


Contingency: This course may be cancelled, or additional sections of this course may be offered pending student enrollment.

In addition to teaching, there is an expectation for scholarship and service commensurate with the assignment.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Special Education or related field.
  • Five years full-time teaching experience in United States schools.
  • Successful public school experience.
  • Thorough understanding and ability to teach Standards-Aligned System (SAS) and Common Core Standards.
  • Possess or acquire clearances relevant to duties of a Millersville student teaching supervisor.
