The UVA Department of Music is seeking a Technical Coordinator to support the Composition and Computer Technologies program in UVA’s Department of Music, which encompasses CCT faculty, a Ph.D. program, an undergraduate curriculum with diverse offerings in composition and music technology, and the Virginia Center for Computer Music (VCCM). The Technical Coordinator is an essential part of the thriving creative and pedagogical community of musicians, composers, coders, makers, scholars, and engineers that make up the UVA Music Department. The CCT program maintains a busy annual schedule of courses, concerts, and online events that draw artists and audiences from across the university, the region, and the world.

The Technical Coordinator will provide curricular support, manage a network of sound studios, support faculty and student projects, oversee concert and event production, and manage a program budget. This position also offers opportunities to contribute to the music community through original event programming, artist work, and/or research.

Desirable applicants will be motivated self-starters, with a thorough understanding of computer-based musical practices, analog and digital maker practices, recording and live sound concert production, and computer music studio setup and maintenance.

This is a full-time position with benefits and salary commensurate with experience.

Examples of typical Technical Coordinator responsibilities include:

  • CCT curricular support in the form of setup, maintenance, inventory, and repair of all hardware, software, and equipment

  • Maintenance and scheduling of various spaces such as sound studios and labs

  • Collaborating and assisting faculty and graduate students with project development, academic endeavors, and performance

  • Creating and maintaining a budget that supports the CCT program

  • Working with the CCT program to develop and support music productions both on and off Grounds. Helping to schedule events and rehearsals, coordinate design of audio, oversee purchase/rental of equipment as necessary, communicating with guests, and oversight of set up and break down of events.

  • Supervise a team of student workers, providing training, guidance, and schedule management

  • Develop and offer trainings and tutorials on the use of facilities as needed in support of the curriculum

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, MIS, Computer Engineering or related discipline and three years of experience required.

  • Master’s (MM, MA, or MS) in computer music, computer science, recording arts or similar field is preferred.

  • Musical experience: Significant experience with issues and challenges related to the field of electronic / computer-based music and experimental music practices is preferred.

  • Technical experience: Sound studio design and support, concert production experience, recording engineering experience, programming experience in common music software such as Max/MSP, Pd, Supercollider, etc. Advanced programming experience in Java, C/C++, Cocoa/Objective-C/iOS, JavaScript, Python, etc. welcomed but not required.

Physical Demands:

While at times a sedentary job involving extensive use of computers, this position does also regularly require lifting and moving of equipment.
